I love baseball and what Sammy Sosa (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=230603116) did is one of the worst things you can do during a game. CHEAT! I have always though Sammy was fake and never bought the hype around him. He won't answer the roids question and now this! No wonder the Cubs are perennial loosers. His explanation is even more pathetic, since there aren't any home run durbys for a while. What a joke!

Here is also the offical ruling in this situation.

MLB rule 6.06 states that "a batter is out for an illegal action when... (d) He uses or attempts to use a bat that, in the umpire's judgment, has been altered or tampered with in such a way to improve the distance factor or cause an unusual reaction on the baseball. This includes, bats that are filled, flat surfaced, nailed, hollowed, grooved or covered with a substance such as paraffin, wax, etc. No advancement on the bases will be allowed and any out or outs made during a play shall stand. In addition to being called out, the player shall be ejected from the game and may be subject to additional penalties as determined by his League President."

Futuremark just announced that Sosa didn't cheat, he was only optimizing his bat.

I can only imagine what he was thinking when his bat broke...

Ah I'd merge the two threads if I could. But yeah, quite a disappointment from Sammy; he's considered somewhat of a baseball "role-model". Now he's another Ruben Rivera... and every other bum who's done this stunt.

My thread was first! So merge the other into this one.

I just wonder how many home runs were corked.

Stick a cork in him, he's done.

He repeatedly stated he uses corked bats for BP so the fans can enjoy it more, and he simply picked up the wrong bat when he stepped up to the plate in the 1st.

I don't know why, but part of me believes him. After all, the increased power of a corked bat is measured only at 1% greater than a standard bat. It's not that he's getting a real advantage, it's the fact that it's illegal.

First that bonehead Jose Canseco made the charge of racial bias. http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0604/1563420.html

Oh yeah if a light-skinned future hall of famer had been caught with cork in his bat nothing would have been made of this. Everyone recall the uproar over Mark McGwire using that supplement? Meanwhile who of his peers continued to be admired by people?

Then Pedro Martinez bent over and let loose with bs of his own.

Also he was whining about old stuff too.

Hey Pedro, if you are so unhappy give back all that big money racist light colored folks are paying to see you play.
