On my Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard I have one SATA hard drive with Ubuntu Linux(kernel 2.6.27).
Also, I have and IDE DVD rom drive. I have two and tried both. I can only copy micro sized file off of disks.
Any thing bigger than about 1 meg fails. I then see the follow kernel message.

[47350.799713] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 15903612
[47350.799722] __ratelimit: 290 callbacks suppressed

Try different BIOS DMA settings for the controller the DVD is on from Auto(if it's that way) to UDMA2,etc. Could be the 40/80 pin cable also.
