My brother just called and said his Xbox is giving E 74 with a system error message, and the power light has gone red. I just bought it for him a year ago so I don't know what the heck happened. Can anybody tell me what the best course of action is? He does not have inet acess and I'm not an Xbox guy so I'm clueless as to the next step. Thanks.

Tell him to call:

1-800-4MY-XBOX

Hours
9AM - 1AM Eastern
6AM - 10PM Pacific

I got this from the MS Xbox support site.

3****ty. My nephews system died from that same error after updating to NXE. Yeah just tell him to call that number.

If his system is under 3 years old they should repair it for free. Also make sure you say it gave him the three red rings of death before that error. They will sometimes try to duck out of repairing it.

This.

If he concentrates on the numerical error code, or anything else, they will charge him for repairs. He should just say "three red rings error" and nothing else, basically. The silly Indian techie will ask him to make sure it's plugged in and some other retarded crap, then send him a return box.

Mine just E-74ed as well. It's actually only one ring. Not that it matters. My console's 3 rings warranty expired 6 months ago anyways. Xbox #4 here I come

E-74 = broken scaler chip or GPU. Not much you can do

$99.99 repair if you submit your repair request online. $119.99 if you have to call and talk to a representative. Microsoft passes on the savings to the consumer!

Why are you still buying them? I am on my second one (got it repaired for free)... the instant I have to pay anything to MS to get the system I already paid for fixed because they rushed the POS out... I will no longer be having a 360.

Because I have a X360 VGA cable, 2 controllers, over 20 X360 games, X360 wireless adapter (which I luckily didn't have to buy), 2 fake guitars and a fake drumset for the X360, over 1000 MS point still on my account, over 75 RB and GH songs downloaded, a 120 GB X360 HD, and 11 months left on a Gold account. I've put a sizable enough investment in that I don't plan on quiting over a 100 dollar repair which comes with a 1 year warranty

And most of all? I enjoy the Xbox. A lot :D

I understand all of that... but by the time all is said and done, you could have bought a car with all of the money you are spending on repairs :\.

Buying a $400 car is just asking for even bigger repair bills.

I forgot about this thread but my bro was asking about it today. So as far as the three red rings, if they ask for details does that mean the ring blinks red three times? Or where does the reference to three come from? I just want to make sure he can explain it well if they press him.

So whats the best way to prevent an out of warranty 360 from rrod'ing?

I mean modding wise.

Apply AS5 for your XBOX, swap two stronger side fan in,that's what I did for my X360 since the first RMA (it's been almost 2 years now, everything works like charm ever since)

LOL Microsoft screwed it again, I got the Guitar Hero World Tour full instrument set a month ago (the only game I play on 360), luckily this game is coming to PC this summer (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/45744/Guitar-Hero-World-Tour-Announced-For-PC) so if my second 360 dies I will just play the game on PC.

I just keep my 360 in a mini-fridge, and run the cables out to my tv and controllers.

that better be industrial fridge otherwise it won't be able to keep up
