system freezes

Hello,

I'm running FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE with a CORE 2 DUO cpu (2,66Ghz) and 2GB of RAM (in dual channel). The motherboard is an ASUS P5Q SE with the latest BIOS. I'm using the last nvidia drivers too (nvidia-driver-180.29) with Xorg 7.4.

As said in the title, I have serious instability issues: X starts without any problems, but after some times (~1 hour) either:

- the display displays black for one second (flickering) and then come back, it do this only one time. Generally when I look at the kernel logs I have this output :
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0001
This happens generally less than 10 times in an evening. It's generally not "fatal" (=I don't have to reboot), but sometimes it is (with image corruption). One important thing is that this problem occurs also under Windows Vista (except that I don't have to reboot)

- the display start to flicker very quickly (with image corruption) and I have to reboot the system. The kernel outputs things like :

I really think it's a bug in the drivers as the problem doesn't appear if I use the "Driver nv" in Xorg.conf.

The problem occurs less if I put my RAM in single channel mode, and *seems* to dissapear if I only put 1GB of RAM in my system.

Ubuntu 8.10 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP x86_64
nvidia 180.29
gforce 9600GT x2 in sli (apparently working)

Thought it might be due to compiz running when using switch user applet, haven't used it for a while (only single user) but still occurs. Identical symptoms, even on vista.
must be drivers.

Can provide more info if needed.

Hi,

I'm not running compiz, so I doubt it's that. It freezes even when I'm doing "normal" (no 3D intensive stuff) desktop work (mail, www, vim, etc)

Just curious, what's your motherboard ?

its Foxconn Destroyer with P13 BIOS (i've heard that P14 is available but cant find it on official site yet).

4gb 1033mhz ocz ram (had faulty 800mgz reapers earlier and had to change as memtest
detected faults - this one is fine).

amd phenom 9950 quadcore

I've got warning at boot that havnt got memory hole enabled in bios but i dont think that has anything to do with it.

now this made me confused..:
i was looking for some solution to switch memory hole on in bios but since it fairly new one its not that easy (havnet got AGP - only PCIex) - which i just found might be causing the problem.

I just tried the 180.44 release (from the FreeBSD Ports) ... and the problem is still there. Any idea if the problem comes from my computer (BIOS ?) or perhaps a bad card ?
