There seem to be no negatives or positives at this time, just a few more options. It's the same program, no noticeable change in resources, and for now, both use the same AV database. However, once support for 8 is cut off, you'll want 9.

If you paid for 8, you get a free upgrade to the same version of 9. Otherwise, you can use the free version of either.

I find 9 is let intrusive with the update progress. 8 shows the progress window every update. 9 will just show a corner popup with what it has done recently.

I am using 9 now seems ok but I never get virus's.

I have been using avast forever now, how does it fit in as comparisons go?

It's ok, though I found it to be a little more bloated yet a little more configurable if you compare the free version of each. Avast Free as Email scanning, Avira Free does not. Yet Avast can have more background processes unless you switch them off. I use gmail and hotmail exclusively now so Avira is the best for my gaming rig.
