rocking the OC'd 8400 cpu right now and looking to increase the core system speed when doing heavy processing tasks (audio processing and recording) as well as video encoding.

I think the i7 stuff is still entirely too expensive right now and am curious if I'll notice THAT much of a difference if I moved up to a Q9550?

Now... while technically I CAN afford to drop $600 on:

core I7 920
MSI X58 pro
6gigs OCZ gold DDR3 1600

I'd need to know if I would truly be getting my money's worth vs the Q9550 in the system listed in my sig.

Check some benchmarks to see if more cores will get you a significant improvement in the areas that you want to improve.

If they do, a Q9550 is a pretty sweet CPU and would save you a ton of money over the i7 system. You can always sell your 8400 too to make half of it back.

the 8400/mobo would go in the wife's machine if I went with the i7.

ehh..... I don't need anything THAT bad.. I may just chill with the 8400 until i7 prices drop.

I'm waiting to upgrade as well. My son is leaving for the Army July 1st, and then I will have money to spend on upgrades.

If you aren't desperate for the upgrade then I'd wait.

The i7 is a monster, but the prices are dropping pretty steadily.
