Press Release: Integrated Graphics Chip Market to Disappear by 2012 According to Jon Peddie Research
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, today announced a new study that indicates the end of the market for the popular integrated graphics processor chipset, known as the IGP.

After fifteen years of stellar growth the IGP, will cease to exist, replaced by graphics embedded in the processor. Integrated graphics are used in desktop and net top PCs, notebooks, and netbooks, and various embedded systems such as point of sale, set-top boxes, and signage systems.

In 2008 67% of the graphics chips shipped were IGPs. In 2011 it will drop to 20%, and by 2013 it will be less than one percent. Read more at TechPowerUP (http://www.techpowerup.com/87157/Integrated_Graphics_Chip_Market_to_Disappear_by_20 12_According_to_Jon_Peddie_Research.html)I believe John Peddie study is wrong, it will take much longer for the embedded graphics processor to replace the IGP.

The reason is the Westmere is going to be the only CPU with EGP in Q4 2009 and the AMD Fusion is now pushed back to Q2 2011.

The question is what NVIDIA will do about this.

That's pretty exciting to think about. :)

I'm sure they'll pull through this, though it'll probably require them to either beef up the speed and efficiency of their IGPs (even more than they have already) or go in a totally new direction.

I don't think they have much to worry about with Intel's integrated GPUs... they're likely to be slow as dirt and lacking features, as always, but it won't stop them from being put in every single budget system on the planet. AMD could put some pressure on them though in features and speed.

nvidia really just has to help increase demand for good graphics performance and then follow up by integrating more and more powerful GPUs into their chipsets. We never would have thought 3-4 years ago that we'd have something almost as fast as a 6600GT built into motherboards, let alone used as a super-low-power platform like the Ion. Give it a few more years and we'll have 9800GT class GPUs integrated into our HTPCs.

Intel, too. They have tons of PC's and Laptops out there with their GMA GPU.

Hm? Intel are the ones that are making the CPUs with integrated GPUs (Westmere).
