Hi,

I want to upgrade my graphics card. I am playing FEAR 2, Farcry 2, Deadspace, Left 4 Dead, and possibly Crysis Warhead. I have a 22 inch Samsung LCD with a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050. I wanted to know some peoples opinions about the GTX 285, given my display resolution. I have heard that the new GTX 55 nm cards are for big displays (atleast 24 inch). Would I be wasting my money on a 285 (or even a 295) versus a card like the 260 (I don't mention the 280 here because it's price is almost the same as the 285, and thus possibly redundant). What do you think? I hope that this thread sparks a conversation, because I would like to hear a number of peoples views.

For that resolution a GTX 285 seems alright. If you´re thinking of buying one i would suggest:

...since the 285 gets pretty hot and is rather noisy with the fan at 100%.

Ok, how about this: for 1680 x 1050 which is better: 4870 1gb or 295 SSC edition? And by about how much in fps?

I had a GTX 260 that was crazy overclocked (756/1566/1242) and went to a crazy overclocked GTX 280 (738/1566/1260). At stock though a well overclocked GTX 260 can match it.

Why would you buy a GTX 285? Its indentical to the GTX 280 except for the higher clock speeds. You can easily use EVGA precision and bump any GTX 280 to the same clocks as a 285 and voila, free upgrade.

I wouldn't say you can bump up a GTX 280 to GTX 285 speeds that easily. The GPU may overclock to 650MHz, but NOT the shaders or memory. I tried to overclock my GTX 280 up to 1500MHz shader speed, and it would crash. Some GTX 280s may go that high, but it isn't guaranteed.

Well I don't own a 280 now, and given the roughly same price I figure I can buy a 285 and overclock that, thus with a better card overall. Plus, smaller architecture, less power consumption. I honestly don't want the most power hungry card in the industry in my computer (both 280 and 295). the 285 feels very comfortable. Any thoughts against the 4870 1GB?

Seemed like a good choice to me :D.
Fastest single chip solution, with future option for SLi x 2 or 3, Plus being Nvidia the option to have a dedicates physics card if wanted at a later date.

Plus the advatage of having a little better power usage to performance ration.

12 days and counting till I pick up my new system(crazy)

Here's a little review on the cards

My 2 cents:

Everything is playable @ 1920x1200 on a GTX260 - 216 unless you're wanting to apply AA to Crysis and even then, you're likely going to need SLI for that anyways even with a 285.

Cryostatis @ 1920x1200 top quality with Shader model 4.1 runs like **** on my GTX 295.

well thanks for all the input. i actually don't need help, i just wanted to hear what people have to say. i am going to go for the 285 SSC, i cant find the ftw anywhere. i didn't know this was a political forum, maybe if i post this thread on fox news they will offer some opinion on the gtx 285. anyway thanks for replying, but i still don't have my question answered (apart from Dreamweavernoob - apparently he dont like the prez - good luck in 2010 :thumbdwn:).

What part of your question wasn't answered?

This was the question I didn't get a complete answer to:

"Ok, how about this: for 1680 x 1050 which is better: 4870 1gb or 295 SSC edition? And by about how much in fps?"

My response would be -- what settings are you playing at? The 295 is going to give you considerably more room with higher levels of AA. You'll likely be able to use nhancer to force Combined AA modes for an excellent image quality. With the 4870 1gb, you will be slightly more limited. Look at these benchmarks, they'll give you a good idea of general performance difference. The 295 is obviously more powerful than a 4870 1gb.

The link I posted above has both the 4870 and 295 along with a 260, 280, 285 and 4870 x2

The 295 is great for applying 8AA at 1920x1200 in most games, and 4AA in Crysis. :)

i can testify that upgrading from 280 to 285 was a stupid and unneccessary decision that I will have to live with this year. At least I now have a card that is eligible for stepup for the next 90 days!!!

For a resolution of just 1680x1050 a GTX 260 will play any game ,but there are some GTX 280 at newegg for just $289 and it will play any game just fine .If you have a SLI board then I would go with a GTX 260-216 since they are just $179 and two would be $360 verus over $500 for a GTX295 ,but a ATI 4870 1gig is not a bad card either and they are around $180
