To compete against Radeon HD 4890 - http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-plans-geforce-gtx-275-against-radeon-hd-4890/6719.html?doc=6719
VR-Zone learned about a suprise counterattack from Nvidia against the Radeon HD 4890 RV790 card where both camps' offerings are slated for launch on April 6th. Nvidia has briefed their partners only very recently and details have been pretty vague so far. However, it seems Nvidia is confident that this card will be able to compete, if not, wins its competitor's offering.
CJ told us that GeForce GTX 275 is gunning for US$229-$279 price range which competes directly against the Radeon HD 4890 card at similar price point. One possible configuration of the card could be 216 SPs, 512-bit memory interface and higher clocks than GTX 260. Another less possible config could be 240 SPs with 448-bit memory interface.

It's probably just a GTX295 split into two?

Doesn't really seem necessary since the GTX 285 and 260-216 are so close in performance already.
Hopefully it has a 512bit bus and 1Gb of memory though. I think that'll help them sell more of these cards vs ATI's cards that are all 1Gb now.
... also, I was under the impression that the 4890 was meant to compete with the 285 as the fastest single-GPU card...?

They should have called it the GeForce GTX 265XXX SSC, IMO.

+1 That would have at least made sense.

Nvidia’s GTX275 has GTX295 chip

Just one chip.
Nvidia needs a card that is faster than GTX 260 and that won’t beat GTX 285 and the answer is as you can imagine GTX 275.
Our sources were told that GTX 275 will have the chip similar to the one you see at GTX 295 dual card, but of course just one of them. The GTX295 chip is mixture between GTX260 and 285 chips and this GT200 55nm has 240 Shaders, and we can only hope that it will have the same number of them for GTX275.
The good news is the price of the card that should end up at $249 suggested etail price and the card should be out in early April.

Nvidia really is the king of giving old tech a new name. :P

Much like AMD with the Radeon 4890 and specification leaking all the time, it seems to be similar for NVIDIA. As you guys have heard a gazillion times already NVIDIA will release the GeForce GTX 275 as reaction to the new Radeon HD 4890 graphics card.
As it seems the card will have a full set of shader processors accumulating up towards 240, just like the GTX 285. The difference in-between these two needs to be found in the memory bandwidth as the GTX 275 will have a 448-bit memory bus.
It is now rumored that the GTX 275e the following clock frequencies:
Core clock 633MHz
Shader clock 1404MHz
Memory clock 1161MHz (x2)
GPU Shaders Mem Shaders Mem bus framebuffer Price
NVIDIA
GTX260 576MHz 1242MHz 1998MHz 216 448-bit 896MB 179 dollar
GTX275 633MHz 1404MHz 2322MHz 240 448-bit 896MB 229 ~ 279 dollar
GTX285 648MHz 1476MHz 2484MHz 240 512-bit 1024MB 339 dollar
AMD
HD 4870 750Mhz - 3600MHz 800 256-bit 512MB 149 dollar
HD 4890 850Mhz - 3900MHz 800 256-bit 1024MB 249 dollar
Pricing wise we expect he GeForce GTX 275 to cost roughly 229 dollar en 279 dollar. Both the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275 will be launched somewhere in week 2 of April 2009.

Nvidia yields are good enough that the 260-216 no longer really has any place. NO sense turning off shaders/TMU units when you have fully functioning hardware. If it replaces the 260-216 then theres really no reason to be annoyed by such a release. It makes sense to not artificially deflate your performance by disabling hardware on functional wafer cuts. I really don't expect the 260 to be around much longer.

Anyone have an idea what the power draw will be on this thing? It will definitely be worth getting if it can match the GTX 280 in performance at less power draw than the GTX 285, maybe even the same as the GTX 260.

Why 1792MB? Why not 2048MB? Seems odd that it isn't a full 2GB...
Looks like a promising card. Will have to see if my Step-Up is still good. Might just be ditching this GTX260 if so... :p

I don't know the exact terms for it but its because the memory "banks", the memory bandwidth, and the ROPs are all connected.
To have 2Gb of memory it has to basically be a GTX 285 (32ROPs, 512bit bus) rather than a GTX 275 (28ROPs, 448bit bus).

slower
The 275 is faster in most tests, but loses in others.
The 275 should run cooler, with better power consumption and better overclocking.
Plus, you don't need an 8 pin power connector.

Performance are almost identical. It's silent, but it reaches 90°C.
