Anyone know something about removing the small heatsink on the backside of the R300 chip on boards like the 9500Pro Prophet?
Seem like it would have to go in order to fit a heatpipe, and after using my old fanless V5 for over two years, I can't stand the medium frequency whine created by any small high-rpm fan.
Try this:
GPU Heatsink Removal @ Overclocker cafe (http://www.overclockercafe.com/Articles/GPU-HSF_Removal/)
Edit: The article isn't specificly about the backside, but if it isn't obvious how it is attached, then it is probably thermal glue, and hence the theory of the article should remain valid.
And no, I've never tried it myself on a r300-backside.

Thanks for the link....
Seems like the backside heatsink isn't the only problem with mounting the heat pipe on a Prophet... there's also the large memry heatsikns.
Think I'll just try to replace the Orb-style fan with a quieter model.
