will have to buy new PSU tomorrow, old one has warranty, but I called Silverstone they said 3 weeks for turn-around. One replacement arrives i will sell the replacement.

I'm almost sure the noise comes from the VGA... mine X2 does the same sound under LOAD (FPS 60+), previous 4870 too...

Actually the PSU could be just fine. What I believe makes the noise is the vibrating of those little ceramic "life savers" with the copper wires wrapped around them. I have no clue the real name but you should get a nice visual of it. My TT Toughpower 750W was RMA'ed for that same issue way back when. The only thing I could notice with the replacement is they wrapped those pieces with shrink tubing. I read a bunch of different posts and I believe that is what most people were claiming. (Was a while ago)

The PSU itself works just fine, but it's very annoying to the end user and makes you think that it's going to blow up. When you get your replacement in see if you can see inside of it and look to see if they added any shrink tubing or not. On the TT PSUs those parts are right next to the outside casing, so it's easily visible to see the different between the old and new ones.

Either that or it could be a capacitor issue, then you might have a problem. If your pc was having issues running correctly when it was squealing then I'd say there is a definite issue, otherwise it might just be more of a cosmetic type of issue rather than an actual PSU is getting ready to fry.

EDIT: Found it, that part I was talking about is called a torid inductor. It's basically a reverse capacitor.


Inductor: An inductor is essentially a coil of wire. When current flows through an inductor, a magnetic field is created, and the inductor will store this magnetic energy until it is released. In some ways, an inductor is the opposite of a capacitor. While a capacitor stores voltage as electrical energy, an inductor stores current as magnetic energy. Thus, a capacitor opposes a change in the voltage of a circuit, while an inductor opposes a change in its current. Therefore, capacitors block DC current and let AC current pass, while inductors do the opposite. The strength of an inductor is called--take a wild guess--its inductance, and is measured in henrys (H). Inductors can have a core of air in the middle of their coils, or a ferrous (iron) core. Being a magnetic material, the iron core increases the inductance value, which is also affected by the material used in the wire, and the number of turns in the coil. Some inductor cores are straight in shape, and others are closed circles called toroids. The latter type of inductor is highly efficient because the closed shape is conducive to creating a stronger magnetic field. Inductors are used in all sorts of electronic circuits, particularly in combination with resistors and capacitors, and are commonly found in PCs.

noise was there right after putting the computer together, I called EVGA (thought it could have been capacitor on GTX280, or x58). Was told that noise is not a issue, if i want to RMA. After that i tried to OC, couldn't get anything stable.

Now stock clock is not even 100% stable.

Hmm yea that doesn't sound good. My issue was that I could run everything perfectly, the PSU was just making a squeal. It only did it under heavy loads like what you were seeing. If you can't run it stable without OC'ing then something is definitely wrong.
