Anyone tried benchmarking this yet?

Yeah i have seen it in Action and it, like all of Intels video based cards are terrible performers. The nForce2 IGP wipes it all over.

ROFL, does this thing even have hardware T&L support?

Extreme, LOL  Extremely crappy :p

Intel's lackluster integrated graphics do nothing but hold back PC graphics. Hopefully ATI's new chipsets will break into this sector.

Yes sadly the masses consume the lowest forms of technology in existence. A scary thought is the #1 graphics "Accelerator" out there is an integrated Intel "solution". Pathetic.

Someone has to compete with Nvidia's Nforce/GFX4MX combo. May as well be ATI. Funny how things work out, I use an AMD processor with an Nvidia chipset and an ATI card, so why not an Intel processor with an Nvidia card and an ATI chipset. Strangeness indeed.

For the time being I think it's better for both companies (ATI and NVIDIA) to each have their own architecture (ATI - NetBurst; NVIDIA; K7, K8) to mature their core-logic making capabilities (ATI and NVIDIA are each on their second attempt yet...!).

It would also be interesting to see which company switches first and caters the other market (apart from licensing problems BTW).

My prediction is that within 5-6 years we'll see Intel either outright buy a company like ATi or it will beef up it's own graphics division and wipe the floor with both nvidia and ATi.

Intel buying a graphics company; could be.

A new 3D division from Intel; well...

If you see all the hassle companies like ATI or NVIDIA has to go through to get a new core, the question is if the costs outweigh the probible profits...

A company like Intel could sure start a new division from the ground on up, but it would be _extremely_ expensive...

Actually it'd just be a matter of upgrading their core graphics division, they don't need to build one from the ground up. They also already have the most advanced foundries in the industry coupled with the best engineering talent around. For example, if they snatched up a bunch of SGI/ATi engineers, all they'd need is to put out high end boards and better integrated graphics. That alone would put the squeeze on a company like nVidia and drive them out of business or at the very least reduce them to the size of company's like Trident (or worse). Keep in mind this is something I do NOT want to see happen, the last thing we need is an Intel monopoly in the video card sector. However, I would be happy to see a partnership between ATi and Intel :)

For Intel to compete in the high-end sector it would not need a simple upgrade from what they have today. It would mean a total revamp of the entire division and Intel as a whole. Not only does the core logic has to be entirely revised (they are currently at the 'DirectX 7 level') to compete, but also their driver division has to be completely different from now...

But indeed, Intel has the manufacturing capabilities and the capital to pull something like this off...

ATI already has a relationship with Intel on their core-logic; it would be very, very easy to further tighten their relations...

Well,

Intel is indeed at a very good relations state with ATi...Remember when ATi got the first manufacturer licence for the P4 Centrino mobile processor :)

However, as licensing of the chipset technology isnt cheap (remember when VIA had (dont know if things changed) no licence to make P4 chipsets, and they tried to supply chipsets "close to spec"..), I dont predict nvidia to get any such licence anytime soon.

ATi on the other hand can easily get an AMD licence, since AMD is always happy to have more good chipsets around!

But,I think the companies won't try and change processor/chipset strategy..Nvidia is doing well on the AMD part, ATi is doing well on the laptop P4 part (their desktop stuff dont float around much).

Anyway, a move from Intel allowing ATi to enhance any Intel chipsets (those fancy 850, 845 etc) would severely boost ATi's power in chipsets.

We'll need to wait on that one.

VIA has resolved their legal dispute with Intel and now have a full license for NetBurst.

Word has it that ATI's new IGP's will give i865/i875 a run for their money...

They already tried to bust into the 3d graphics card market when they purchased Real3D way back when. It was pretty much a waste of time. Although I think this is the general graphics core Intel still uses....some derivative of that i820 graphics card.

Ah, poor Real3D and their i740...

Brings back memories of laughter...;)

Ah, i740, that's what it was.

i740 actually wasn't that bad. It was just eclipsed by much better cards very soon after its release :p

They also released another killer card in i810...;)
