After a 5-mile pursuit, you expect the worse to be thrown at you, if I was a cop, I would have shot him....

Here's what happens,
5 mile chase, and everyone nerves are on end

Suspect gets out of the car, so do several police officers, suspect points *something* at the officers and at least one officers mistakes what's in his hand and fires.

The other officers hearing the gunshot, react to it, and the *something* in the suspects hand, and open fire.

There is a good case for this to an accident, but the suspect brought it on himself, all he had to do was pull over.

In a country where just about anyone can be armed, policemen are bound to get trigger happy... as said above, in that situation, pointing anything at them is a very bad move indeed...

They guy could have had a pocket knife and been running at the cops and he still would have been shot.

Gun ownership isn't the point.

The point is this; there was a high-risk situation, adrenaline gets flowing, a suspect jumps out of the car with what appears to be a weapons......What do you do?

He was obviously running because he doesn't want to get caught. Lets think...Man who doesn't want to go to jail flee's car chase with a weapon.

I hate to say it, but I think I would have shot him too.

I hope that people don't turn this into another Amadu Diallo (spelling is wrong, sorry) case. In case you don't know, a few years back in New York he was shot 41 times on the front steps of his apartment building, because he reached for his wallet when was told to freeze and put his hands in the air (or so the cops claim). He was innocent, this guy was just a moron it seems.

He was shot at 41 times. He was hit with 16 rounds. 2 officers emptied their clips (16 rounds a piece) one officer shot 5 times, another 4.

He was already under investigation by the INS for filing false asylum papers. He claimed his family was destitute and victims of "Human Cleansing" in Guinea. His parents are college educated, middle-class citizens who are very much alive and not victims of anything.

He had already been in jail for sale of stolen property. He was a street peddler. All these things lead officers to his door, plus a physical discription.

A little food for thought.

Yeah..sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

But think about this. If feel your life is in danger, are you going to stop pulling the trigger before the gun goes *ClickClickClick* ? Reloading takes time. If you haven't put someone down by the end of 16 rounds (17 if one is chambered).....G'night Alice!!

If your an expert marksman, it only takes 1 bullet to make sure nobody gets back up (though even they will use a 2 or 3 round burst on target). As for the rest of us...well, necessity is the mother of invention. Introducing the Magazine!!
