I am trying to figure out what the best software firewall for a Windows 2003 web server is...

I would like to use something other than the built-in Windows Firewall and I do not have the option to use a hardware firewall.

So far, I have Eset's Smart Security (since I already have their antivirus) and ZoneAlarm on my list.

Any suggestions you all have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Stick with Eset , there is not many other good alternatives.

Close all non essential ports on the router .

question is the server a domain controller?

if so you will not have firewall option anyway.

Drolfrawd,

This machine is not a domain controller, but rather a multi-purpose application server (HTTP/DAV, FTP, Email, SQL, etc).

I personally would stick with eset smart security, we use this on all our systems.

and all our maintenance clients administered by us , are all on this setup.

Nothing is flawless, but eset doesn't miss much, coupled with ease of admin

and has a small footprint

I would stick with ESET. Or you could run a VM with IPCop or PFSENSE, then run a Local Loop-Back through it. That would be super.
