Alright, I watch quite a bit of anime on my PC, and some of the more recent h.264 HD mkv files have been giving me issues.
I need a better media player, or better codecs, or something. VLC will occasionally freeze up when playing HD videos, and Windows Media Player won't properly display the subtitles in my mkv files.
Any suggestions? Point me towards a media player or codec pack that will work well with Vista 64.
klite codec pack no good?

Haven't tried it, I've been using the DefilerPack for the longest time...I get the feeling it may be dated.
try klite http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm
i used to only use vlc to play everything too but now i just use klite+media player classic

Alright, I came up with a solution. I downloaded the CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net ) and played the MKV files using Windows Media Player Classic, and VIOLA! Everything works perfectly.
VLC STILL won't play the HD MKV files...but from what I've seen on other forums, it's simply a problem with VLC.
Try using Media Player Classic.
In my opinion it does a much better of rendering mkv with the correct codecs than VLC.

Plus one for cccp. VLC has a problem with extended displays and that pack worked perfectly for me.
By no means am I surprised... I've been telling people that Klite has sucked for the last 8 years its been around. Its a massive codec pack and frankly, the LESS codecs cobbing up your windows the better. CCCP relies heavily on a single driver library to decode most everything, and it is very good at decoding the popular formats used out there. It also comes bundled with media player classic, a simple yet powerful little player.
As for VLC, i am shocked that you would be having any problems with it. It does tend to render subtitles baddly, but I've never seen it fail to decode something. Its usualy my goto player when ive got corrupted or unfinished movies downloaded.

No one in this thread was complaining about K-lite until you came in. :headexplode:

LOL
klite is the best pack for lower spec PCs. CCCP and Vista Codec Pack is better for higher end HTPCs.
