There was a thread not too long ago about the recent change from people using phrases such as "Nvidia is working on something NEW!" to something like "Nvidia are making great progress!"
What's my quibble? Is and Are
Let's analyze a few things.
The word "is" usually refers to a single noun such as "Tom IS a boy" or "The house IS on fire"
The word "are" usually refers to a plurral noun like "We ARE nvidiots" or "They ARE stupid."
Now on to the next stage...
Nvidia IS a company. Read that again... not Nvidia ARE a company... why? because Nvidia is singular. There is only ONE Nvidia, and since ONE is SINGLE (singular) we should always say "Nvidia IS" and not "Nvidia ARE"
Now the PEOPLE at Nvidia... there's more than one person there... SO it's plurral. "The guys at Nvidia ARE working on something new" now we see how it works. So here's the main point.
Correct structure:
"Nvidia IS great" or "Microsoft is a *****"
Incorrect structure:
"Nvidia are great" or "Microsoft are rogues"
Get the picture?
Let's all try to use correct context from now on...
OH and while I'm at it... "Then" and "than"
"than" means something close to "instead"
whereas "then" is a reference for time and action
Correct structure:
"I want more THAN that" or "If you won't do it, THEN I will"
Incorrect structure:
"I want more THEN that" or "So go ahead and cry THAN"
ahhh I've been wanting to get that out for quite some time.
I realize that throughout most of this post I neglected correct punctuation and capitalizaiton, but that wasn't the topic. It's all about singular and purral nouns, and incorrect use of the words "Then" and "Than"
I'm done.
