Who the hell is Stafford and what has he done in the NFL?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/draft-2009/04/24/Stafford-Lions/index.html

There will not be a holdout with the top pick in the 2009 NFL draft. The Detroit Lions and agents for Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford reached an agreement on a record-setting contract that will pay Stafford a guaranteed $41.7 million.

The six-year contract, worth $72 million with minumum playing time achieved by Stafford, could rise to $78 million with incentives.

The Stafford deal is a significant increase over last year's first-round pick, Jake Long, the tackle who was picked by the Miami Dolphins.

Long's deal averaged $10 million per year on minimum playing time, and $11.5 million per year achieving maximum incentives.

Stafford's deal is $12 million a year with minimum playing time and $13 million per year with incentives.

It's a good thing the economy is rock solid and salaries are not being looked at with greater scrutiny.

Btw, to give you an idea of why the NFL NEEDS a cap on rookie pay, go check on how much money the Mannings, Warner, Big Ben and Brady are making. Compare that to what Matt Leinart is making and Stafford will be making.

IMO, salaries have gotten out of hand, period. There should be a $500k rookie salary (for 3 years), after that, it's $1million.

I would love to get paid for my hobby, or what I love to do.

NFL first round salaries are plain stupid.

Stafford? Yeah saw this a few hours ago and had to take a double take at that guaranteed $41.7 million. Kind of ridiculous as they could have maybe gotten a few proven seasoned players. That said I don't think there should be caps with the money some NFL teams rake in. $500k rookie salary (for 3 years)? What if he becomes the next Montana with the crowds to match? You have to look at it from the perspective of the crowds some of these players might draw if they become a winning player.

The NBA has rookie salaries and then, if you are good enough (i.e. Wade, Lebron, so on) you EARN more money.

If you suck (see Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic) you DON'T max out and make more than proven stars.

We're talking about the Lions... They don't know how to draft properly, which has probably hurt them as much as anything else.
