Keep in mind that this an extremely heavy cooler. It's the same cooler that the Sapphire Ultimate 9700 Pro comes with, so if the mounting holes on both cards are the same, I don't see why not...

Wait for other opinions though.

Zalman has not (at least AFAIK) confirmed that the ZM80A-HP can indeed be mounted on FX-cards (or more correctly, that it can dissipate enough heat to be used on a FX).

Sometimes I wish nvidia would actually make some technical documentation easy to find, such as heat dissipation of the chips, maximum temperature etc etc. Would make life so much easier.

As for the heatsink itself, I'm have just bought one to try it out on a 9500Pro. Will see what happens, though there shouldn't be any thermal problems given that the same heatsink is used on 9700Pro in several tests (and Sapphire even manufactures one).

Returning to nvidia, ThermalTake has just released their Giant II heatsink which does contain a small fan. Overclockers Cafe (I think it was) has just tested it, but could not mount it on a FX5200. Unclear if this is an issue with other FX-cards as well.

in fact I really doubt that it will work with 5800 Ultra and not fry your card to death. This cooler has been designed for GF4s and will probably also work with 5600s but do not try it with a 5800 or a 5900!

and if there will be two versions, how much slower is the 5900 128mb non ultra?

i have only seen fx5900 128mb, i havent seen any ultras with 128mb yet....

The short answer is yes!. For example Leadtek has a card on it's website that is the "ultra" using 128 MB of memory. Some manufacturers gives me the impression of naming their 256 MB versions "ultra" and 128 MB version "non-ultra", even though they are both based on the NV35 "ultra" core.

Makes me wonder what they will call the NV35 Value that is rumoured.

Anyway, my suggestion is that you carefully check the specifications of the card(s) you are interested in to find out the operating frequencies and amount of memory. You would probably do this anyway, I'm just putting it in print :)

The Zalman ZM80a heatpipe will NOT work alone on a GeForce FX 5800. Notice that copper heatsink covers the RAMs on both sides. DDR2 memories REQUIRE a thermal solution at those clocks, and cannot run exposed. I came, I saw, I fried my stock 5800U in a case with a 59*C ambient temperature. RMA'd a replacement because the RAMs overheated to death!

Consumer GeForce FX 5900 cards ship with DDR1 memories, so you might be able get away with a GPU-only cooler like the Zalman heat pipe.

The FX 5200 and 5600 are fine with a Zalman ZM80a heatpipe.

Hardware Analysis (http://www.hardwareanalysis.com) has tested the ZM80A-HP.
We used it on a number of cards in our office, including a Radeon 9700 Pro and a GeForce FX 5600.They also had the following to sayFor those that are curious whether it’ll also cool a GeForce FX5800 or 5900, we have to say that we didn’t even bother to try, as these cards get very hot with their stock heatsinks already and those feature high rpm fans, so we’re sure the ZM80A-HP will not be able to handle the heat load without some assistance from a bracket mounted fan
I'm still tempted, because I have a low-noise fan placed to blow air directly over the AGP area. Might be a very expensive experiment though. :D

Woah! BTW, did it ever crossed your mind that since you RMAed to one of nVidia partners, you are practically giving money to nVidia because that partner would have to potentially buy more cards? ;)

Well, PNY had a 5800-U to ship me in stock the day I called, so PNY didn't actually buy an extra card form NVIDIA. Eventually PNY receives credit from NVIDIA for any failed product shipped to PNY, so NVIDIA will likely eat the expense of my failed card in the final accounting.

However, as an NVIDIA stockholder, I wouldn't mind if PNY ate the cost of the failed card.:D
