I'm building a i7 rig, using a EVGA x58 mobo and not sure on the ram right now it is
OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800/ 1600MHz
Timing CL 7-7-7-24 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)

Will I be able to get upto 4ghz overclock with that ?

or should I upgrade to
OCZ DDR3 PC3-14400/ 1800MHz
CL 8-8-8-26 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)

Thanks

You should be able to get to 4Ghz with 1333Mhz because the RAM multiplier goes as low as 6x for the i7.

This means, if you want to hit 4Ghz with an i7 920 (which has a 20x CPU multiplier), you have to reach 200Mhz bus speed (up from 133Mhz).

The minimum speed you can set your ram to is 6x your bus speed, so you'd need ram that could handle at least 1200Mhz. 1333Mhz can handle it obviously so that will work fine.

The only reason you'd need anything higher is if you really wanted to squeeze a little bit of extra performance out of the system by running the memory multiplier higher than 6x to get more bandwidth. I believe the next highest you can use is 8x (which is also the default) so you'd need 1600Mhz DDR3 to hit 4Ghz with that multi.

I've been looking at that OCZ Platinum 1600Mhz ram you mentioned and I think that's probably the best buy. Its only like $90 at newegg and it has a mail in rebate.

Alright thanks alot for the answer, I'll go with the 1600mhz, that would allow any overclock I throw at it right ? also, how hard is it to overclock the 920 ?

From what I've heard it isn't too hard.

I haven't made the plunge yet myself, but I've read about it quite a bit.

It isn't as simple as overclocking a Core 2, but it still doesn't seem too bad. Just make sure you get a good cooler. The i7 is hotter and more power hungry than the Core 2.

Just get the PC3-12800 for 4.0ghz.

ok thanks, 12800 it is, as for cooling I'm using the ocz freeze and noctua nh-u12 cooler
