Is this suppose to fix the problem with non-nVidia cards under Linux?

Yes it does. I have gotten glxgears running on my 9700Pro a7n8x. Unfortunatly I have not been able to get DRI working. I get the following error in the XFree log;

drmOpenDevice: open result is 6, (OK)
drmGetBusid returned ''
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (6, PCI:2:0:0), Permission denied
(EE) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit failed!
(WW) fglrx(0): DRI initialization failed!

I belive this happens as a result of compiling the kernel with a different GCC than the ATI drivers. Damn. If I figure it out I'll post a solution here.

OK. I figured out that one. It was because of some earlier mucking about in the fglrx makefiles trying to get the old drivers to work. I now have DRI enabled, or so my XFree log says.
But as soon as I open glxgears, or even run fglrxinfo, X freezes. I can still move the mouse, and ssh in, but any attempt to kill the runaway process totally locks up the box. This might not be the answer we're looking for.

What Linux distro are you using? Did you have to recompile your kernel?

What the heck happened? With the old 256 driver at least the network would function, now the ethernet port cant even get an address and the sound STILL doesnt work on spdf. Seriously, does nvidia have some sort of axe to grind with nforce users not using windows? When you download and install this RPM file thats listed for suse 8.2, things should just plain WORK. Why is this like pulling teeth? Sorry to rant but all this time gone by and no results. Perhaps a p4 platform would be a better choice next time but damn it.........

I did it!!
I downloaded the 2.4.20 kernel. I applied the patch found in the 'nvgart' directory from the driver in Midnight Watchers original post. This patch would not apply cleanly to the 2.4.21 kernel. I then used the standard fglrx driver from ATI. I didn't need to use nonolk's modified source. ~6000 fps in glxgears.

Well, now I don't have the nforce2 IDE support. Does anyone know of a patch I can apply to 2.4.20 to get it? I don't want to apply all the ac patches because that will probably break the agpgart.

if you remove the line + agp_bridge.num_of_masks = 1; from the diff it will compile against 2.4.21.
But i didn't get the nvaudio module to work with the new kernel :(

Don't use NVidia's audio module in 2.4.21
Use the i810_audio from the kernel itself.

That works very well on my A7N8X

Thanks for the tip but I guess the spdif output doesn't work with the kernel modulel or am I wrong ?

Since I have my speakers connect via a spdif cable I need the output :(

Just removing that line won't make it work with 2.4.21.

I fixed the nvidia patch to work with newer kernels, you can get it here (http://penna.dyn.dhs.org/~penna/linux-2.4.21-agpgart.diff).
