A "fat tax" proposal to pay for a New York obesity prevention program is facing stiff opposition in Westchester.

The one percent tax hike proposed by Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Brooklyn) would apply to junk food, video games and television commercials, which Ortiz blames for New York's growing obesity problem. Ortiz did not rule out tax increases on other things that he believed contribute to obesity.

The tax proposal is hard to swallow for many Westchester residents. Many feel they shouldn't have to pay extra for an occasional snack to support programs for the obese.

Dr. Dominick Artuso of the Community Hospital in Dobbs Ferry says physical inactivity, like playing video games does contribute to obesity. But he says there are other factors as well. Artuso says an obesity prevention program would be a good idea but a "fat tax" isn't the way to do it.

Chances of the proposal passing look slim after a spokesman for Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said he would not support the tax.

Their response would be "I am big boned" or "I retain lots of water" or "Yeah, I wish I had YOUR metabolism".

Thats what annoys me about overweight people, they don't do anything about it, they just make excuses.

Its like a guy from work said last week, look at the holocaust, you didn't see any fat survivors coming out of Auschwitz saying "oh, im big boned, I have a low metabolism". They were all thin. Proof (extreme proof, i'll grant you), that anyone will loose weight if they simply eat less food and don't sit on their asses all day.

My excuse is that I'm lazy when I'm not at work.. but why do other people care? It's my body... it doesn't impose on anyone, and I know I can lose it when I want to. I don't however believe in dieting. Smoking on the other hand imposes on others, the excuses are lamer, and people have a right to be bothered by them.

If I have to start paying to support your lifestyle or help you lose weight or whatever through taxes or any other way that isn't voluntary your fat body is imposing on me and everyone else who doesn't think this is right;)

The moment I have to start paying to help out some fat slob "lose weight" is the moment I will break through that fat slob's front door with a meat cleaver and help him cut out the excess fat:firedevil

I think we should tax the illiterate to fund schools too. More books should solve the problem.

I think we should also tax young mothers and fathers to fund sex education classes. We all know how well sex ed. works!!

I think we should tax old people to support history classes. They created the stuff! They should pay for it!!!

AARRGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!1

GIVE ME A F********* BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fu:
