Looks like Bush admin needs to see what true leadership looks like.

Maine, if you've never vacationed there, it's a must. Just don't go in the Winter.

Maine is a beautiful state, and you're right about the avoiding winter part. It's pretty then, but a tad bit cold.

What European nations have this? Sweden does, correct?

Last I checked, most of them have it. It'd be easier counting the ones that don't.

YAY!

One more step to a socialist state!

Now that we've left the cold war era, lets all say it..

Socialism is not evil, socialism is not evil ..

All it would mean to us, is that the government would have to use our tax dollars to our benifit instead of their own. Got a problem with that Matt!

If it makes you feel better. At least you admit you are a socialist. LOL!

Yes I do have a problem with it. I have a big problem with transfer of wealth systems.

BTW ask Canada how well it works.

Huh? When did I say anything of the sort? And even if I were, so what!

And it's not about transfering wealth, you're thinking Communism. Try to remember there is a difference. As for Canada, what, their system doesn't work or something, have you seen ours lately!!!

I think what your overlooking are the benifits. Try this on for size.

Some guy out of a job gets shot. he loses his leg, but the docs save enough of it to accept a prostheses. But since he can't afford one, he must do without.

Now, Universal health care, he'd at least have the prosthetic.

So UDaweg, since you're so hard core against Universal health care, why don't you find some examples of when and where it's failed the people. Rather than just saying, "oouuu it's socialist, run away, run away".

Someone gets cancer from second hand smoke that they were subjected to at a minimum wage job. Our government taxes cigarettes but where does that money go? This person after being born into poverty is further downtrodden by our government which did little to protect them, and a healthcare system which does little to help them. There are many other examples I could use that make our goverment/ healthcare seem uncaring... the point is I think we need Canada's type of healthcare if we consider ourselves to be a decent country to live in.

Yeah, didn't the Canadian Premier come down to the US for some medical procedure a few years back? I hear lots o' tales from my in-laws up in Detroit about the Canucks crossing the border for US medical care.

My wife has a friend living in London who had her first run-in with socialized medicine. She was having fainting spells and an irregular heartbeat, and it took almost two months for anyone to see her. Thanks, but no thanks.

Cheers,
JND

*LOL* They only come here if it's PAID for!!

Otherwise don't expect a thing!!!

Oh JND, we've had people sentenced to death with our privatized system. That and many of our senior go up to Canada to buy their med's, since here, we'd private industry would put them in the poor house. Still think it's all that?

Wow, that's a bit hyperbolic. "Sentenced to death?" Gimme a break. People die of malnutrition in the freakin' hospitals in the UK. So what's your point?

It used to be that kids would care for their parents once they reached a certain age. Now, folks just say, "what the heck, the government will take care of them." Screw that. If my parents need medical care that the can't afford, *I* am going to pay for it, not just assume that the government will take money from someone else to pay for it.

On prescriptions, well, that's a whole 'nuther can o' worms. I think in some cases people are on many unnecessary drugs and become psychologically addicted (better living through chemistry, have another Soma, and all that). And y'know, people COULD just buy their own insurance coverage...or pay out of pocket. I think you'd see doctor's visits going waaaaaaay down if people had to pay cash with every visit.

There is no quick fix. Putting the government in charge will not help. Putting insurance companies in charge will not help. Putting trial lawyers in charge will not help.

Cheers,
JND

When a government makes money from cigarettes, they best damn sure have a nice free healthcare system for those affected. Oh wait its your fault:rolleyes: :p

IF the government says cigs are so bad then why won't they ban them? Instead the government needs the cig companies as pushers so they can have another source of revenue.

I think smokers should pay a heavy premium on insurance to compensate for their bad habbits. Why should my premium go up because some dolt wants to smoke?

Another thought. How can the govenment use cigs as a argument that the government needs to take over the health care system because smokers cost private insurance companies too much? They say the cost of keeping smokers alive is pushing insurance companies to raise premiums and taxes the over all health care system. How can this be true when smokers live a vastly shorter life than non smokers?

Notice how it's only smokers that are successfully sueing the tobacco industry? Damn the US is so backwards.

Lets all sing the money money money song:p

YAY!

One more step to a socialist state!

See he is happy about it, why can't you:p

Edit: I can't see the problem with a national health system, works fine for us over here. Perhaps people should actually do some research into what its like before they brand it as evil socialist clap trap. Or maybe ignorance is the favoured tool of some people *shrugs*

I'm thinking they're having more fun shooting off at the mouth than finding supporting evidence for their claims.

Oh well, to each their own.

ever considered that not everyone is able to pay for their parents healthcare? have you ever read about the industrial revolution? families of 10 living together on space that your first own room was and every single one of them working to pay just to get thru the godamn day, not to think of healthcare. and dont tell me thats ancient history or you may be considered completely ignorant. there is a reason why the government (e.g. everyone) should pay for the healthcare especially of those who cant afford it else.

I think legalizing it would be a terrible idea. You hate the cig companies now? Wait till they take control of the marijuana industry. They would completely monopolize the industry.
On the other hand I hate the fact that we spend millions of tax payers dollars just to bust and keep your average pot head in jail just because he has a 5oz bag. Go after real criminals. I think the penalty for possestion should be less sever and go after the producers. Who cares if a guy has 4 plants in his house and waists his life growing and smoking his owne little stash.
