Windows 7 does have a driver and it installs fine, but upon trying to explore the camera or import data from it, it locks up explorer.

What's odd is the native windows picture importer sees the file and shows the thumbnails but then dies on explore or importing.

Just an FYI.

SD780IS is the model I am using.

"IS" is not a model line, that just means Image Stabilizer has nothing to do with model line.

SD780IS is one of the latest Powershot SD cameras introduced in early 2009, I have SD990 introduced at the same time, and it works perfectly fine with win7.

Also have SD900 and SD800IS, all work without any issues.

Make sure WIA (windows image acquisition) is enabled, if that doesn't help reinstall windows probably something got mest up.

All new cameras for couple years been relialing on PTP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture_Transfer_Protocol

So if your camera is not working, then means no camera will work with your windows.
