What is all this AA stuff? I must confess that I am slightly out of the pc loop and I can only ever recall having just an option of AA. eg you would select 2xaa and that was that.

I have your situation being looked into Xion. However at this point we basically have to wait. Fixes/driver verification of problems takes time.

As far as the differences between transparency SS and ATI's AAA Quality mode and my thouggts. Thats a very subjective debate and IMO not something I'm terribly interested in defending or promoting. But the workloads are very different. If you're using a hybrid mode. You are probably doing 2x Transparency SS and alpha to coverage 2x in 4x mode. ((in 8x AA mode its 4x Supersampling 4x AAA would be my guess)).

On Nvidia you get full 4x SS on all alpha textures. Transparency SS in heavy Alpha loaded scenes is expensive. And paticularly with 8x MS + Transparency SS you are hitting enormous fillrate requirements. Which is why it can be so slow. And I can definately see the usage behind having a "hybrid" mode. And it's something I'm gonna start questioning Nvidia about. I'll be the first to admit one of my biggest beefs with 16xQ/8xQ ((beyond memory requirements)) is the enormous fillrate requirements of transparency supersampling. But if your doing full 8x transparency supersampling. You are doing alot more work than a hybrid mode.

Thanks, Chris. Yeah, I wish that Nvidia would look into a hybrid mode like ATI has for transparency AA. Because I honestly can't tell the difference on Oblivion, and it's faster. I won't argue that Nvidia's is technically superior and honestly don't care to as I can't tell, visually. And I've looked very close at both.

There may be other games that do show a difference, though. Oblivion's been my main focus as of lately.
