I know this is an obnoxious question because there's a million of them. But I have a 720p video file and all the converters only convert 480x320 and I don't wanna bump it down. Also none of them preserve the aspect ratio and just kinda smoosh it all.
any help is appreciated....and free is good

Ummm, I don't understand. You want to play 720p video on your iphone? You do realize that even if you could, it would be downsized to the resolution of the screen (480x320) anyways...so you might as well just convert it.
I've never done such a thing, but I'm sure there are apps that will maintain the correct aspect ratio...

Well yeah You can't play a 720p resolution file on the iphone... its to taxing for the phone. Heck I think the phone will just reject playing it...
This (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112) is the best free video converter and it should support the iphone. :) It also doesn't have a limited output resolution and there is an option to keep the aspect ratio.

yea the reason was because you can output it to a TV and it will output the resolution of the file not the native res of the iPhone. Same for the iPod as well.

No....I don't think it does. Do you have an supporting evidence of that?

Says iPhone 3G supports up to 480i.....

I stand corrected, you are right. I could have sworn I read somewhere that you could put a larger file on there and that it would downsize it when you played it on the device but kept the native res when you played it.
Still, what would be the best encoder for keeping the native res?
