What do you guys think? The screen shots so far really don't do it justice. The system requirements are pretty high in my opinion and they have stated that NO CURRENT system can run all graphics at full (I can attest to that, I can't max everything YET.) But I have a crappy processor (P4 2.66/1GB DDR400/FX5900Ultra)...This game is beautiful. I can't say more than that (hopfully the NDA will drop next week and I'll post movies and screens).
1.04 What are the minimum requirements?

The pretty graphics are all this game has goingfor it. It doesn't feel like Star Wars when playing it and thier "solution" for replacing the leveling system in MMORPG's with a skills based system leaves much to be desired. Even entertainers are forced to join some combat eventually. It's a decent game. It's just not a great game. I'm passing on this one hopefully in favor of WoW.

I played WOW for a bit at E3. Didn't care for it personally. I havn't tested it in depth or anything though. It could be that the cartoonish graphics threw me off...Not sure really...

I'd love to discuss SWG, but I'll be a good boy and abide by the NDA. I've been in beta now for about 2 months. It sounds like it will be lifting within the next week or so.

As for WoW, the graphics in that remind me of AC2. I'd like to see them throw some bumpmapping and shaders on there to give the game a bit more eye candy. As for gameplay, I've learned to not believe any sort of hype and find it necessary to judge for myself. AC2 sounded great on paper, but turned out to be a shallow letdown.

swg may run slow at this state because it is not fully optimized yet...

I can run SWG at 1600x1200 with everything maxed and 4x fsaa and 16x AF and get a steady 35-40fps :afro2:

Just kidneys! :(

I got accepted into the beta but discovered that it would cost $10 to play their unfinished game. Didn't seem worth it to me.

Blizzard use cutting edge graphics? That would be a welcome first.

I'm very happy with my beta experience in SWG. The graphics are fantastic and I love the gameplay. Of course, I didn't have to pay anything for my beta as I got it at E3 for free. Then I was able to get a guy I met at E3 a buddy key for my friend, so we both ended up getting to test for free.

Bah, I'd have wanted to be in the beta, but they didn't accept people under 18 :( ( they accepted the applications, but later stated they wouldn't be accepted in the earlier stages, then cancelled what they called the later stages, eh )

No matter what, I've been well following SWG's development for nearly a year now. Before that, I had played UO for 3 years ( I loved the pre-Trammel days, damn OSI and their candybear land! ) - and I must admit, SWG's solutions to most of the problems are very nice.

What you're gonna see against the skill system, crafting system, ... - all of that is really just people who either never played games who have such system ( such as UO )and seen the defects / advantages, or who got no idea what they're talking about.

I'm really looking foward to SWG, and I frankly don't care whether it's $15/month - it's worth it, compared to how bad UO is right now and that they're making you pay $12 or $13 IIRC.

Well, it's actually $10/month right now, but it will be $13/month soon.

The NDA has dropped and galaxies comes out next week (Thursday I think.)
Here are a few screenies I took today...

Damn this is a pretty game...
NOTE - These shots were taken with everything maxed for my system. It gives graphics sliders based on your system config. They have stated that NO machine available today can run the game at it's highest settings...

Yay! No more NDA!!! Now I can go on and on about my SWG Beta Fun!

SWG is fun.

Nice graphics too. Although I recommend Anisotropic Filtering at 4X.

Um.... Fun Fun Fun.

They say it's not like Everquest, but it seems a lot like it to me. But in a good way!

Here's a fun screeny.

Here's another. This game is certainly worth trying folks.... although in my humble beta testery opinion, they should have held the game back for 3 more weeks to polish it a little more.

Galaxies is very cool, and I've found soloing to be very feasible indeed (although you may need a little patience!). However, hunting on Endor and Lok pretty much requires you be in a group, as those planets have VERY tough creatures! (ACE music on Lok, though! shame few people go there)

And another screeny :)

Im not impressed with the screenshots, looks not better than asherons call 2 tbh.

And its the same old batting womprats with a stick before you can fight anything good. Completely fails to capture the spirit of star wars in my opinion.

Uttar your not missing much, you should of lied about your age tho so they can't tell ur immature :)

Sorry about the screenies, I run at 1152x864 and had to shrink them to 800x600 (they WERE 500-800k!)... but I played Asheron's Call 2. What was it, a 7 day trial? 10 days? For some reason it was uninstalled from my system within 48 hours. And believe me, I gave it a lot of chances.

Galaxies looks BETTER.

Yes, you can start by fighting Womprats, but you start with a decent Star Wars™ Blaster, which makes it a lot more fun than just a generic basic starting weapon. And you don't HAVE to start by fighting Womprats, there are, like, 5(?) planets you can start on. There's some 'fodder' but it's not very long before you're fighting HUGE beasties!!! And there are low level bad guy characters you can fight from the start, if you prefer to begin by shooting Gungans and Wookiees!

What else was there...? Well, it looks better than Asheron's Call 2, it plays better than Asheron's Call 2, it doesn't start badly and go on for hours before there's fun to be had; it's fun from the start (well, about 20 mins in :)

MrNasty, you say it doesn't capture the spirit of Star Wars, but it does. Not 100% of the time by any means, but there are many many moments when it does. I haven't even tried most of the Theme Parks (such as Jabba's Palace), but it has been a very Star Warsy experience.

Oh, one more thing. This isn't meant as a flame, but I'm fairly certain you haven't played. Therefore, try to keep your guesses as guesses, rather than phrasing them as statements of fact ("its the same old batting womprats with a stick before you can fight anything good...", "Uttar your not missing much..."). Thanks!

Gabe at http://www.penny-arcade.com/ said that it sucked as a starwars game, that it was like any other MMORPG...

PenguinJim
06-22-03, 11:37 AM
Gabe says:

"What I’ve decided is that the problem is not with SWG. I believe they have succeeded in creating exactly what they set out to make, a Star Wars MMORPG. The problem is that what they made is not the sort of game I like to play and that’s not a bad thing for anyone but me."

He really doesn't seem to like it, does he? The developers said it wasn't going to be Everquest in the Star Wars galaxy, but it kind've is. Which is a shame for people who don't like EQ, and perhaps a good thing for those who do. I was hoping it would be different, but I still like it.

Gabe also says:

"The more I think about it the more I think that there may very well be nothing wrong with Star Wars Galaxies. This just isn’t my kind of game."

I'd go one further and say that lots of people won't like this game, but lots of them will. The action seems very relaxed for a Star Wars game, but that's not to say it doesn't feel like Star Wars. I have had lots of positive experiences from beta testing this game, and suprisingly few bad ones (I can't even think of any offhand...).

I have no doubt that this game will be one of the Big Ones of the year, despite the early release, but it's been described as a Star Wars MMORPG since it was announced, so please don't expect anything different. It's a good MMORPG.

I think the game doesn't cater to the powergamer enough. It only took me a couple of weeks to max out my character in beta. That being said, I still think that this game improves on most things in current MMORPG's.

Those who are playing, what server are you going to be on? I think my guild is still set for Starsider at this time.

PenguinJim
06-22-03, 11:58 AM
Isn't Starsider the roleplaying one?

I'm gonna be on a (perhaps random) East Coast server - improved my ping by about 50 when I switched to Bloodfin. Shame there's not going to be a European server for six months :(

I believe the reason the devs gave for no European server at launch is "What's a Europe?"

monkeydust
06-22-03, 12:09 PM
Yeah, Starsider is the unofficial East Coast Role Playing Server. My guild decided on this server even though I won't be doing any "role-playing" myself.

Just play as a Trandoshan and growl at all the Wookiees. Works for me!
