Scheduled for a fall release, Torchlight is a boldly styled action RPG with tons of loot and randomly generated dungeons, but as you'll see, players can also easily modify the game to suit their interests. Runic Games President and Project Manager Travis Baldree describes the background of the game and reveals two of the game's three classes - the melee powerhouse Destroyer and the magic-wielding Alchemist. We'll watch as Travis shows the editor in action, and later Travis tells us how Torchlight the action RPG will transition into Torchlight the MMORPG.

Interesting and cartoonish.

looks cool, very similar to mythos in style, classes seem changed. Mythos was really good if you ask me, definitely had the diablo feel and I enjoyed it more than Hellgate. Price point seems pretty good and I like these sorts of loot gathering action rpg games. Based on what they were doing with mythos I'll be getting this one.

Looks good, I hope it doesn't have any of that wildtangent bs.

It looks nice and a type of game I would really like.

Hello Runic Games, Blizz called, they want their D3 design and artwork back! :)

It looks fantastic. The editor looks simple and broad!

Matt Uelmen who worked in Blizzard is now a sound designer in Runic games. This is great!

Would you stop calling action RPGs 'diablo clones'? Diablo 1/2 have been passed and surpassed long time ago, hack and slash is a genre and not every game is a 'diablo clone'.

They are calling it a diablo clone because thats what it is. It's not an action rpg alone, look at the gameplay and how it looks... it looks like diablo in another skin. If it were playing like zelda behind the back view it wouldn't be a diablo clone but everything about it looks like they copy and pasted from diablo.

It's about $20 or €14,39. It's a singleplayer game but it's cheap and looks to have great gameplay.

Very low system requirements, possible to play on Netbooks f.e.
System Requirements
o OS: Windows 2000 or later
o Processor: x86-compatible 800MHz processor
o Memory: 512MB
o Graphics: DirectX-compatible 3D graphics with at least 64MB of addressable memory (such as an ATI Radeon 7200, NVIDIA GeForce 2, or Intel GMA 950)
o DirectX®: 9.0c
o Hard Drive: 400MB

Some gameplay movies;

Horrible art design.

I like it, I am most likely buying it given it's price and play style.

You don't like the style? I think the art design is quite good.

Given the low specifications I believe they made it cartoony because it looks better in those conditions.

I don't mind cartoony, I just... don't like the art. Not sure why.

IMO, the world looks a hell of alot like Diablo 3, heck that very first scene in the youtube video is like a direct C+P from Diablo 3, the scene in the crypt type place.
Overall it looks ok, though the animation is a little rough, the only thing I dont like is the actual characters, they are cartoony, but not in a good way, though honestly im getting tired of all the cartoony graphics of late, the only cartoony game Ive really liked the look of is Team Fortress 2, all others, especially this type of game, seem to mimick what Blizzard has done with WC3/WoW/D3, in the same way Battlefield Heroes has created a horrible copy of TF2 style

Honestly, this game seems more of a Fate clone than Diablo clone. Actually, it basically is a Fate clone. Fate is all singleplayer(like Torchlight), you have a pet(like Torchlight), you can change your pet into different animals by feeding it fish(like Torchlight), your pet holds your inventory and can sell for you(like Torchlight), all levels are ever changing(like Torchlight), the graphics are 100% cartoony (like Torchlight). Yea the game has Diablo 2's controls scheme, but so does Fate. This is completely a Fate clone.

Which isn't bad necessarily. I bought Fate when it first released for around $5 bucks(before it was even heard of by anyone). It gave me plenty of hours of enjoyment. The game does eventually get a bit stale, but still worth the money.

I'm on the fence as to if I will buy this. No multiplayer means I can't play with friends, but it also means I can play casually and leave whenever I want without feeling guilty. Due to the baby, I've told myself I'm not going to play an online RPG again for a very long time due to time constraints.

Well it is not surprising it looks like Diablo II, Mythos and Fate. Because there are key people from those games working on Torchlight. Heck, it would not surprise me if Torchlight has more people that worked on D2 than D3 has.

And as I said, the cartoony style is probably a choice to make it look more acceptable with the low demands the game has. Look at the specs I posted, they are ridiculously low. A game trying for a more realistic style would probably not look as good because realistic demands a certain level of detail by standards today.

Um, actually, this is a topdown action RPG, mostly featuring inside dungeons and catacombs, it will naturally require a lower end computer just by nature of the genre, so I doubt making it cartoony to make it playable for everyone is what they were thinking.
