I get the dreaded BSOD several times a week since I updated through microsoft to SP2. The upgrade went flawlessly - no errors or locklups. Now every once in awhile I get the BSOD. Before the upgrade my system was rock solid stable - no issues at all.

Any ideas guys?? I'm baffled.

Anything in your windows event logs/problem reports?

Nope. Nothing there. I thought at first it might be a hardware issue, but everything was fine before the SP2 upgrade. Now the BSOD. It just happened a few minutes ago as I was on this forum.(lee)

Confused??!!

What does the BSOD say?

well did you install anything else besides the sp?
Go through and update your display drivers
run memtest to see if thats the problem.

process of elimination...
if you have another hard drive install a new OS and see if that one bluescreens as well. If it does then its a hardware problem. If not, then its software.
You could also roll back the service pack and see if that eliminates the problem. If it does, then theres a program/driver that isn't happy with SP2.

hope that helps!

I had this too with a Vista install with 8 gigs of ram.

Pulled the 2 sticks and vulla it worked ok so check all the banks of ram cuz Vista hates all banks used for some reason shaw.

I think that was only an issue with RTM (gold shipped code). The integrated SP1 worked with 8GB of ram, I've know cause I've done it without issue many times. So if he's got an original Vista copy that might be the problem.

Im starting to believe that too.

Its something to do with original cd or dvd and ram.

I know even for 8 gigs or ram you need to tighten up the timings and vcore just right or bsod will occur.

Well thats possible as having more memory slots populated is more work for the memory controller. Usually NB voltage has to be bumped if you have all 4 slots populated.

Yea thats pretty much the norm with most nbers.

usually a 5 percent upping of the vcore to about 1.2v on nvidia and 1.3 on intel usually is the fixerupper shuvs.

Good news guys........I went back to the 177.79 driver and........wala....no more BSOD. My pc is fast and stable again.(nana2) Strange......

Is there anyone else having issues with the 180's drivers and Vista SP2?

Chipset? Is there an issue with the NVidia GForce 8200 mobo chipset? I've found it to be very fast and reliable.

You should be fine than.

I was thinking of a snag in the drivers but you found that and fixed it.

Well I thought I had the problem fixed........but had the BSOD again today.:thumbdwn: It hasn't happened since I went back to the 177.90 vid driver last week.

Before with the 185's it did it once, twice a day. Now it's once a week??!!

I'm not sure what it is now...........all I know is that my machine was perfect before I upgraded to SP2. After the upgrade.......then the BSOD started.

I still believe it's a vid driver issue, but not so sure. I may have to wipe the HD clean and do a complete re-install of Vista SP1. I need to pinpoint if it's a hardware or software problem. All my components are 6 months old or less. I'm leaning toward it being software related.

Any other ideas guys?

Well I fixed the BSOD. Looks like it turned out to be a software issue after all. That was my first gut feeling. I flashed my mobo BIOS w/ the latest update and that seemed to do the trick. Evidently my old mobo BIOS did not like the new vista SP2 upgrade. I ran the Prime95 utility for 6 straight hours without a hiccup....not one error. As you guys all know Prime95 really tests your pc....CPU, memory, and mobo. My temps never reached critical levels during the testing...and that's with a CPU OC of 3.5Mhz!!

I just played Crysis for 1 1/2hrs and also ran the benchmarks...all with my vid card OC'd as well. Absolutely no errors, crashes or video corruption.

I have a lean, mean, screaming machine again!! hehe (nana2) Here's my OC's:

CPU - defaults at 2.8Mhz - Stable at 3.5Mhz w/ my custom cooler - 25% OVERCLOCK!!
GPU - Defaults are : Core 575Mhz - Stable @706Mhz - 22% OVERCLOCK!!
Shader 1276Mhz - Stable @1522Mhz - 19% OVERCLOCK!!
Memory 1000Mhz - Stable @ 1101Mhz - 10% OVERCLOCK

I think these numbers are incredible considering it's all on air cooling! Not stock air cooling, but air cooling none the less. I'm a happy camper.:D
