I just got my new 5900 Ultra...

Okay so I bought a reference board from Ebay... But I have to tell you guys its bliss compared to my old 9700 Pro!

Literally had it up and running for a couple of days. Happily the stability issues that I had with my old Ati card have disappeared.
I'm not going to bash Ati here but after the unpleasant experience I had with their product I'll never buy another.

I've played some "C&C Generals" and some "UT2003" and the performance is great so far. I'm using the 44.03 drivers.

Yes I paid out a crazy amount of $$$ ($600) but I have to say that it was worth my hard earned pennies!

Unfortunately I'm in the middle of moving apartment and won't have the time to really spend some quality time with it for a day or two :-(

Got to agree with you that it's a hit or miss installing the 9700Pro. Nvidia cards seem to have less problems with install and generally don't need a fresh OS install. For the money you paid I hope you really enjoy the card, but it looks like a nice addition to an awesome gaming rig you setup. What IQ settings did you run the games at?

"$600"

Give me a day or two and I'll post some thoughts on the card and settings used etc...

The Ati 9700 Pro was bought in lieu of the NV30 delay / performance vs price.

It kept crashing with the "infinite loop" error... (Shudder)
Also even with a clean OS installation and latest game patches, OS patches and Catalyst drivers, game play quality and stability were BIG problems...

Anyhoo...

Am looking forward to playing "Halflife 2, Doom 3, Homeworld 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Tomb Raider Avenging Angel" etc. etc. etc....:D

9700 Pro's and Canterwoods don't mix very well, from what I've read. Congrats on a truly terrifying games rig

At the time when I had the 9700 Pro, I was using a Granite Bay chipset mobo, ASUS P4G8X Deluxe, never tried it on the Canterwood. I actually tried two different 9700 Pros and didn't make a dent on my issue.

Put the same Card into a board with RDRAM and an i850 chipset and it was rock solid.

Oh well...

Actually, Intel has posted an errata for Granite Bay about the AGP bus. Apparently there is a problem with it. Just FYI.

Errata concerning the AGP bus huh?
Got a link m8?
I'll try to find it myself but if you had one handy...
Thanks again.

now all you need is a 5.1/6.1 THX sound setup and you have a TRUE gaming monster :D

2.1's just don't cut the mustard...

The only real issue I noticed was the size of the card!
Ok it is a ref. board and I'm sure that the retail units will be more compact but it very nearly didn't fit into my case.

Noise levels are fine though, perfectly acceptable.:)

dude, I been toying with buying a new card, I eventually want to get the FX 5900 but I havent got (600) bucks, I was looking at those Ebay Reference cards too and that was just way too much, I was also waiting untill the retail boards came out to see if the reference boards would go alot cheaper on ebay. Every one keeps suggesting I get a ATi 9700 or 9800 in the mean time till I can get a FX 5900. Any ideals what your going to do with your 9700? If your going to sell it, please let me know. Ill be most interested in it. Thanks.

Anyone who is saying that installing Ati card needs reformatting of hard drive is uneducated man. Most of you should try something else for living, if you're on computer field now.

I never had a single problem with Ati cards, neither with Nvidia. Most problems are between the chair and the keyboard.

Anyway Radeon 9800Pro owns 5900Ultra dude :)

Not always, some hard ware configs just dont play well together. But you are right, some users and computers dont play well together either.

Same here...I think most problems in the "nVIDIA -> ATi" transition are caused by nVIDIA drivers leaving their "junk" all over the registry and hard drive.

BTW...Siskods9...the reference NV35 is huge as a mofo isn't it?

Okay... a bit OT, sort of... I am running a canterwood/3G with a 9700 Pro UE from Sapphire as well as a 9800 Pro 128 and 256. I haven't seen one hiccup. I am going to set up another canterwood this weekend with one of these cards, but so far it's been the most stable set up since KT266a (for me).

Putting any ATI card with these NforceII boards has been less than amusing for me, but oddly enough I had trouble with a 5200 and NforceII as well.

As to stability... I am finding the 9800Pros a bit less stable than any Nvidia card I have ran on Via chipsets (KT400 and 400A), but I haven't seen an infinite loop issue rear it's ugly head since my PNY Ti4600/KT333 a long while ago.

Man, ain't that the truth!

I had no problems with my system when switching from the Ti4600 to my current 9800 Pro. No OS re-install needed (or welcomed, heh). No stability issues on this end (as long I can keep that link from the chair to the keyboard going good, heh heh).

The NV35 seems pretty good (and that's a good thing since there is still some Nvidia spirit left in me) but this first ATI card of mine (9800 Pro) is serving me well and I don't regret getting it for a second. The performance between the two is so close (and that says a lot about ATI since the clock speeds are so different) it's just up to individual preferences now.

I'll be cool for awhile and will wait to see what the next generation vidcards from ATI and Nvidia brings to the table.

I haven't had a problem with a video card since the original TNT.

eh right...

I have built many rigs and I dont consider myself a n00b when it comes to video cards either... but I still recommend a format when problems occur... of at least the OS partition when installing new hardware such as a more powerful video card... registry cleaners work BUT some minor glitches tend to vanish...

most people are not uneducated about products.. they do things a certain way because it WORKS for them.. I dont' advocate formatting every few days... but in situations such as hardware changes like a gfx card... yes... formatting is an option that should not be overlooked...

if you are having no problems with your products... great... neither am i...

as for the n35 being owned by the r350... thats subjective...
