Ok guys, my Inno3D 8800GT is starting to go insane and I'm afraid that it's going to catch fire one of these days. :headexplode:

So . . . I have exactly $150 and I need to buy a new video card. This is tax and shipping included. After doing a little bit of research, here are my current options:

* 9800GT
* 9800GTX+
* GTS250

So which one should I get and why? According to my small amount of research so far, the 9 series is just a hair better than the 8 series, and the 250's are just repackaged 9 series cards. I believe that my 8800GT has done a great job over the past two years but a small boost wouldn't hurt.

Any clues? What would you guys buy?

Can't add another $20.00?

XFX GTX 260 (216 Core) $169.99 w/ FREE Shipping (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150329)

Out of those 3 you listed, I'd probably get the 9800GTX+. I wouldn't go with the 9800GT at all.

Two problems with that card . . .

1) Requires a 630Watt PSU. I'm borderline that . . .
2) $150 includes tax and shipping. With Newegg, I get charge tax due to a warehouse in Memphis. Go me.

Here's the card I've been looking at all day. Seems like a small boost and won't get as hot as the 8800GT.

Id on't understand the 2nd point.

As far as the PSU goes, I've had a quick look and I can't see it anywhere. So is it really old or what?

If it is somehow the 600W PSU then it will have absolutely no truoble with the addition of the 260GTX, hell it would probably be fine for a GTX285.

The 2nd point is that with a 260GTX, it would be $170+tax and possibly shipping, which equals $200-ish.

I thought about doing the EVGA step up program . . . maybe start off with that 9800GTX and upgrading to a 260GTX at the end of the 90 days.

I guess I'm going to order the 9800GTX+ later this week . . . wifey demands that I wait until Friday to order it lol.

I see. Though ohw would the step up be different?

Also - is your PSU a 600W version, I just could not find any 620W Zalmans but I did not look too much.

I would go with the GTX 260 as well, I am positive the power requirement they list is incorrect. On nVidia's website it states 500w recommended, also on all EVGA 260 Core 216 cards on newegg it says the same 500w requirement, same with this particular XFX GTX 260 Core 216 card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150361.

And I am with you on the sales tax BS, it sucks :).

I try to order from ZZF to avoid getting the sales tax.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10010365&prodlist=celebros

however still above ur price point.

SS - if you can get it from ZZF without this "tax thing" then go for that.

That's true . . .

My PSU is about 2 or 3 years old so I'm not sure if they make it any more or not.

Thanks for the reminder about ZZF Misfire. I wouldn't mind getting the MSI 260GTX with a $20 MIR . . . but the rebate goes out today. :( Guess I need to wait a few more days to see what new reabtes come out . . .

The MSI GTX260 is only $159 . . . so maybe I can squeeze $10 more out for that.

Maybe another rebate will start soon . . .

Well, if you are sure that there will be another MIR up soon then you could wait. BTW - is that card going ot keep the instant -$40 MIR? Cos if it's not... :p

The 9800GT is identical to the 8800GT, so there's no point in buying one of those.

The GTS 250 and 9800GTX+ are probably good options but I doubt it'd really be a huge upgrade.

IMO, a GTX 260 is the only option for you.

If you're real tight on cash, then there's no point in wasting it on a 20% performance increase. Go for a GTX 260 now or wait until you have the extra $20.

EDIT: Also, your power supply should be fine. The GTX 260 is actually pretty efficient compared to many other cards.

Yhae I think it's very similar to the 8800GTX.

Well . . there's no date beside it so . . .

I'll be ordering on Friday so hopefully it will hold :D

I guess the 260 is the best option, I just hope the prices hold until Friday.

I know it's a little over your limit but, you can get an EVGA GTX 275 for $199.99 after a $20 rebate from Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130475
Damn I should have waited an extra couple of days because I just paid $10 more for it Sunday night. :(
A few people are reporting they are getting the Superclocked card from Newegg instead of the regular one, I hope I'm lucky and get one too.

Edit: I just saw you said you have to pay tax with Newegg, sorry.

Yeah, I wish Newegg didn't charge tax. Oh well, I'll buy what I can afford.

I just didn't want to spend more than $100 and not get a decent performance boost from my 8800GT. :D

That's not too bad. AFAIR I was ordering parts for my dad's new PC and the 260GTX was bought fopr about 180... a few days later it dropped to about 150. Now that's something to go *damn* about!

I just looked at the box for my BFG GTX 260 OC Maxcore 55 and it states that a 525W PSU or greater is recommended. I have an EVGA GTX 260 box and it states a 500W PSU or greater. Both cards are the 216 core version.

** The BFG box also states that the 525W or greater is with a PC configuration with an Intel Core2 Extreme Q9650 processor.

Oh nice, I'm glad that my PSU should be able to handle the 260GTX. Thanks for the info Slippe!
