Hello,

My mothers 8800GTX was returned today and a replacement was sent (the first one had vRam issues)

That last card played COD4-5 at around 80 - 85 degrees the new card which I installed today runs idle at 75 deg and runs COD 4 -5 at 100+ degrees. nothing has else has changed inside the case, cables are in the same place and the driver is the same.

Could some one advise?

Thanks.

did you increase the fan speed? its probably on auto and that usually is not a good idea.

Did you visually verify that the fan is spinning? What brand of 8800GTX is it?

Yes I can verify that the fan is spinning and changing in rpm as I make changes to the fan speed control.

The card is branded Nvidia (brand-less) as it is from dell, It is one day old.

How many fans in the case ? maybe its bad airflow and card heats up ?

Bad heatsink contact, that would be my guess. You need to disassemble the heatsink/fan from the card and check for proper contact between the heatsink and GPU. Reapply better thermal compound and hope it fixes the problem.

If it's because of room temp he must be sitting in a 100 degree F room.

Yes I agree. Contact could certainly be the issue. Try touching the heatpipe that is on top of the heatsink of the card while the card is running. If the pipe is not warm/hot to touch then the copper base is not making proper contact and not absorbing and transfering the heat. one of my 8800 gtx idles at 56c and loads 82c+.
