I'm finally selling one of my A8V-Deluxe 939 rigs so I can game safely @ 720p/1080i for the next year or so.... My x2 3800 and HD3850 AGP aren't gonna be able to hold up much longer @ high settings in all games.

I'm gonna get an AM2+ motherboard, and would like to spend $50-$80 USD. I've heard that any old mobo will allow me to unlock the extra cores on an X2 or X3, but, I just want to make sure I'm going to have multiplier adjustments, and maybe at least a bit of HTT and RAM tweakability.

@ [h], good is being spoke of the Gigabyte AMD 770 chipset mobos, such as the MA-770-UD3...

but I've heard other recommendations that specify the 790GX chipset or motherboards using the SB710 or SB750 southbridge. These are too expensive for me. :(

What about the nVidia, VIA or ULi chipset motherboards?

I'm just planning on using my a Black Series Phenom II, Freezer Pro 64 cooler, some G.Skill DDR2-1066, and an HD4850. Nothing too special.

...

... meh I've been stuck in 939-AGP-land since 2004, so I have some definite catching u to do. :p

I'd go with the Phenom II X2 550:

As for the board, a Gigabyte or ASUS 760, 770 or 780 should be good.

I really like the Asus 780G board in my HTPC, but if you're overclocking you're probably better off with a full ATX board like this Gigabyte:

This ram should be good too:

I'd go with the Phenom II X2 550

I may have to if the x3 BE stock dries up quick. But I really don't want two cores or even the chance of a non-unlockable 550 BE.
