Sorry for the slightly indulgent thread...
So I've never bought played crysis or warhead except for the original demo. Back then I had an 8800GTX and when I played the demo I realised that it wasn't really that great with no AA at 15-25fps. So I decided not to buy it.
Step forward 2 years or so and I now have a GTX295. I think I'm ready to give crysis a go. but should I get warhead or the original?
will I be able to get a constant 30+ fps in Crysis with 4xAA?
I totally missed the boat with crysis tweaking, can anyone recommend a config/mod/settings that give a significant boost in FPS without too much degredation of image quality.
I just finnished Stalker CS on some pretty high settings and I'm a bit sick of the slow downs and jerkiness in busy areas.
will I be able to do crysis without these bothers?
TIA.
Get both :D
Crysis is longer and more involving.
Warhead is shorter but has better graphics, better performance and a few more options in terms of game-play, but it makes a lot less sense if you didn't play Crysis :)
Together though, the games rock.

I would say get Crysis, and if you finish it and like it, get Warhead.

Holy crap! That's a damn good price and free shipping too. I may have to break down and get it. Does Crysis full version run better than the demo after it's been patched? In the demo benchmark I'm getting about 53fps average at 1920x1080, very high settings, no AA and DX9. Would love to turn on DX 10 and get that same result.
I hope you enjoy the game. Singleplayer gets boring very quickly after 5-6 runs then you might ask is that it? I say certainly not. There's the awesome multiplayer also. Multiplayer is the best since Q3 and very fun. Took me a lot of practice and time to be good at it. Well if you're just starting out, there's some steep learning curves to be tackled but hey I still remember when I was a complete n00b I found it very much fun nonetheless.
Both, but play Crysis 1st.

Maximum Game Nate!
Naxinun game, Mate?
Well the singleplayers should be no sweat. If you ever decide to get into the multiplayer, and want to be good at it and learn some tricks like circle jumps, give me a pm.
Maximum Game Nate!
Wow, I didn't notice it, until I read that. I was staring at it for 5 minutes.

Crysis Day 1 Report:
Decided to give it a go at all VERY HIGH @ 1920x1200. No AA.
hmmm, a bit disapoionting I new it would be tough on the GTX295 but not this tough! played through the first level that I played in the demo all those years ago. Decided to do a bit of tweaking at the start of the second level and I realised I had PhysX enabled in the drivers! YES! Plays much better now. reasonabley smooth. still a bit of slow down but I can handle it.
Graphics aren't so ground breaking these days. Yes they are good, but coming from just playing Stalker Clear sky the first thing I noticed was the very low res textures on some surfaces. very dodgey and makes the game seem a bit old. Stalkers textures are brilliant compared to crysis.
pretty fun game, not so much quicksave -die - reload like stalker CS. Infact I think I only died twice in the whole game so far, on normal difficulty.
Tonight I plan to find out what's killing all these Koreans!
p.s. is there a CVAR to turn make the koreans speak Korean? the english is totally lame.
EDIT: is "edge smoothing" enabled by default if I have AA set to "none"?

Crysis Day 2 Report:
Decided to give dx9 mode a go tonight. seemed to improve framerates, mainly because I went from v.high to high settings I suppose. didn't do any benchmarking.
kept thinking "graphics look a bit messy", so I thought I would see what enabling 4xAA in the ingame browser would do.
Looks WAY better now! can't believe I thought no AA was acceptable. and the frames didn't take a massive hit at all. still quite playable although in some areas some noticable slowdowns occur.
definately a much more enjoyable experience with 4xAA enabled.
Gameplaywise I'm really enjoying it. lots of sneaking and lots of shooting. it really is a classic shooter experience. really enjoyed the harbour level and taking down the choppers is really fun. Alot of people said the gameplay was not so good with crysis but I Think it's fantastic. nice open world, unscripted gameplay that is bug-free (unlike stalker).
been playing for 4 hours so it's time to go to bed.
p.s. girlfriend is complaining that she is a PC game widow.

Yes, even with 2AA it looks very good. You might want to try DX10 with the post-processing or shaders turned down to "high" for better frames.
lol thx for the update. There's no doubt that Crysis was influenced by Doom series especially Doom 3. Reminds me of one of D3's hell mission. It was one hell of a mission!
p.s. is there a CVAR to turn make the koreans speak Korean? the english is totally lame.
In your Crysis folder, create a text file and save it as system.cfg
Then, inside the file paste this line: ai_UseAlternativeReadability=0
Your Koreans should then be speaking proper Korean in game.
Now that I think about it, what also could work is if you went into the Crysis\Game\Config folder, look for the config file that relates to your difficulty level (for normal the file is named diff_normal.cfg), open it, look for the command line and change the value from 1 to 0.
I recently had a modest upgrade to my system and re-installed Crysis and was blown away by how well I could run it. Mind you I'm running at a mix of medium and high settings at 1680x1050 0xAA, but I still think it looks fantastic and the frame rate is so smooth, it really makes for an almost entirely new experience.
Oh by the way, if you are running in Dx9 mode, I would suggest creating the system.cfg file I mentioned earlier and including the command r_sunshafts=1. This allows for the shafts of sunlight that shimmer through the treetops and such. Normally this is only available when running Very High Dx10, but it really doesn't impact performance much and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Yep, agree completely :D
When I first played it on my 8800GTS, it was definitely slow and limited my gameplay options.
Playing with my 4870, I had a lot more options and it was a hell of a lot more enjoyable :D
Wait till you get to Warhead, that was definitely fun.
