Probably the same extensions. The reason they needed a new extension to begin with is the limitations in Office 2003. You don't even realize what these limitations are until you start to reach them, and these are easily reached with large datasets in programs like Excel.

That and they completely changed the format in 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Open_XML). I'm guessing that's a big part of why some of those limitations went away.

new format is great, saves faster, opens faster, files are 30-50% smaller.

New format is ZIPed XML. Just rename DOCX to ZIP and see for yourself.
