View Full Version : r420 and nvidia CEO comments
I am not sure if this has been disgussed, but what if the r420 is just ati playing a joke on nvidia. Remember the first quarter nvidia ceo saying that if ati wanted to keep the performance lead they would need to smoke something halucigenic...
Is the r420 that drug?

I have to agree with 5150 Joker, what has this got to do with the Rumour Mill forum?
All I know is the R420 is a serious competitor to the NV40, and supports VS3.0. / PS3.0., PCI Express , ...
R420 means "R400: Take 2" , but maybe they noticed what other thing it means, eh... Not like anyone seriouly cared about it.

well actually he meant R350 and 2003 as a year.
Actually he was right. ATI lost the performance lead already.
So D. Orton was obviously wrong when he said R350 will be the fastet chip till the end of 2003.
I don't think Huang referred to NV40 or R420.
It was more a short term statement.
Discuttable stuff as to whether nVidia got the crown back.
Their AA IQ is lower, and their Pixel Shading performance sucks.
But what's for sure, is that they're much nearer to ATI than with the R300 vs NV30 reviews! :)
Now, all that matters is the NV36 vs RV360 and the NV40 vs R420 fight. All other things are mere futilities, IMO ( okay, beside PowerVR 5 should it be for real, but you get the point )

They didn't lose the lead. r350 wins alot of benchmarks, nv35 wins some. So Id say they are even atm

Hehe, nice one...:)
I wouldn't doubt it- that's pretty funny
C'mpon guys, you've got to admit it's a HUGE coincidence...
....420..Hallucinogenic
I like it, even if it's not true, they should claim that was the motivation behind the naming scheme:jumping: :jumping:

Most reviews will tell you that and even ATI admitted that.
Otherwise i would not understand why they have to get the performance crown back with R360. And that is what they officially stated.
No room for discussion guys.
As it is right now for the gamer NV35 > R350 period.
And that was what Huang was referring too and he was right no matter what some ATI fanboys like to dream of.

I think thats questionable at best; once you also factor in Nvidia's driver cheats, huge 3Dmark03 "optimizations", and forced lower color bit-precision I do believe your conclusion to be utterly invalid :p

Uhm, when did ATi "admit" that "NV35>R350"?
I was under the impression that the 9800 Pro was pretty much universally acclaimed the best video card money can buy right now, are you telling me I'm mistaken? :eek2:
digi,..you must have missed the billboards along the backroads in Arkansas.
Gotta get with the program man. Snooze you lose! Last one in the lake gets a...oops,..nevermind. Outta control there. :D

Funny, now that we are actually starting to see the reviews of the actual shipping product, I don't see that at all. All of the reviews I've seen this week that compare the actual shipping nv35 to the 9800 show the 9800 leading most of the benchmarks. Maybe that's just because the reviewers are starting to wise up and bench things other than the usual timedemo's. They're also actually matching IQ and not using Nvidia's "performance" mode. Huang was wrong no matter what Nvidia fanboys like to dream of. ;)

Dang it, I KNEW I'd regret not cruising the backroads in Arkansas looking for info on billboards again! ;)

What he meant to say is the r400 has been cancled but ati is working on something next, be it 420 or whatever, they will kick Nvidia butt!
Actually it's rather amusing to me that folks say the 350 is the inferior product right now.....
If you folks haven't noticed the 350 IS AVAILABLE off the shelf.....
Where as the 5900U is NOT ( you can find it, but not at great quantities)........ STILL!!!!
I smell a 5800U release myself.... which means it will most likely never be widely available.
Of course thats just MO and nothing more.

I still cannot take NV35 seriously till I see them on the shelves. That hasnt happened yet and the yields are less that acceptable. The card is selling now for over 500 bucks! That still smells like another limited availability fiasco to me. Perhaps this whole NV3X architecture is fubar no matter how mature the .13 becomes. :)

So where do you get it in Germany & for how much?
The leadtek one?
For 500€+ ?
At "Mix"?
Yea, Nvidia has the crown

This is just my xperience my brother has the 9800 Pro and i have the 5900 Ultra (we both upgraded from MX440's) Now i must say we play at 1024*768 cuzz we have 15 inch monitors. In some places specifically BF1942 i think my 5900U looks better and in others like MOHAA 9800 Pro looks slightly better. I think it comes down to brand loyalty of who you think is better BASED ON THE GAMES ME AND MY BRO PLAY. As i dont really go by benchmarks.
Settings we have are.
5900U 4xaa and 8xaf
9800Pro 4xaa and 16af

Sounds like you're having a temper tantrum here...
Looking at reviews of the shipping 5900...it appears that the opposite of what you're suggesting is actually true...
