With my current configuration, is it worth upgrading from 1700 to 2200 for $150us? Am I better off waiting for 2600 and what would of price of that be?

Primary interest: UT2k3 and Unreal2

Wait for the 2600

I doubt going from a 1700 to a 2600 is even worthwhile. Cause a 1700 with a Radeon 9700 or NV30 gonna drive Unreal over 100 FPS easy.

Mike

plus you will be saving more money that you can put towards that r9700 or nv30

Np man

1700 = 1.53 GHz, right??

maybe when the speeds increase a lil' more, consider upgrading.

2400+ will be less than 200 dollars supposedly at launch. Then again, why go that route when you can get a 333mhz fsb CPU in October? Then again, why go that route if you can go Barton a month or so later?

Then again, why go that route if you can go Hammer a month or so later?

See where I'm going with this? ;)

yeah one might as well wait for an extreme upgrade wrt processors
2400+ would be decent once its cheap enough.

you guys make some excellent points. I think what I'll do is simply wait for the official release of UT2k3 and Unreal2. I need to see how they really run on my system, not the stinkin beta builds. It runs decent now, but I feel like it could be running better.

What I will do though is if my girlfriend decides she wants to upgrade from her PIII, I'll likely give her my chip and get the fastest available AthlonXP I can. I'm not anxious to give up my motherboard because I really like the one I got. This has to be the most stable computer I have ever owned. :cool:

It's widely known that the beta builds run like crap. It's why they weren't supposed to be leaked, people 'assume' its just like final code, and thats retarded.

Honestly, I don't even think you'd be able to tell the difference between the two cpus. The only time I ever noticed a difference was when I went from a Duron 650 to a 1.2G Tbird. Upgrading your cpu does nothing for the slowest components in your system - your hard drive and to some extent your memory bandwidth.

Why not overclock your 1700+? I've got a locked 1600+ oc'ed just shy of a 1900+ at stock voltage. I simply bumped my FSB from 133 to 150 and it worked without a glitch. The 1600+ is a great oc'er - maybe the 1700+ is too.

the 1700+ is enough to run UT2k3 and Unreal 2.
