For those of us who are a bit dense...who is WZOR? And, does gold mean that the OS is now frozen, and is exactly what will be released in October? If so, then why do we have to wait?

WZOR.net is the website where the leaks were usually announced first. They've had inside information about each build and when it would RTM.

Gold means that the code has been signed off, enterprise edition for businesses will be delivered around Sept 1.

Retail will still be Oct 22nd. The OS is basically done, the code has been approved for release. Businesses will get it first, retail customers like me and you will be able to purchase it on the Oct 22 release. Yes, you have to wait.

This might help explain how software releases work -

Thanks, that clears everything...except why do we have to wait? I preordered both the download and CD both, so why can't they simply put it on a server for download now? The only reason that I could see for a delay til October is if the OS wasn't finalized yet, but that is not the case...apparently.

Thats just how it works.
All software is released a while after it's gold code. Ever buy a game install it on the day it was released and see a build date 2-3 months previous? Thats just how they do it, it doesnt go gold and then release to retail the next day. They need time to press them, label design, etc.

I understand what you are saying, but it still doesn't make alot of sense to me. The reason not, is that downloading doesn't require any pressing, labeling, etc. I somewhat understand part of the delay, because they want businesses to have access to their servers before retail buyers do, but if they allowed the businesses immediate access to downloads, they could move retail buyers to an earlier schedule. I can't see why the schedule for hard copies to have to effect electronic downloads. I ordered both cd and download, and I don't mind waiting for the CD, but I guess it doesn't really matter whether I mind about the downloads or not, because they are going to do it their way.

when it comes to OSes, release for such a long delay is for OEM partners to get ready their product for final OS.

Any word on when the OEM version will be available? I remember purchasing the OEM version of Vista weeks before the official release.

I think those will be included with Windows 7 desktop/laptop PCs from 22 october onwards. Or am i getting a little confused with the release dates? o.O

OEM is Oct 22, new PCs will come with 7 'around' Oct 22 also. Not sure when Dell will send out 7 to those eligible for a free upgrade.

I was about to dl the final build off a torrent seeing as I'm a little impatient to wait until I get it August 6th off of technet. But it seems like there are a lot of viruses floating around.

I don't know about viruses...because I never used a torrent for W7, but a download from usenet. The last time, when I downloaded 7229, there was one message warning about the fact that there were some downloads which contained alot of malware, so I'm still running 7000. Yet, I wonder if that is the reason for some of the problems that I'm having with W7 now?
