Pretty simple topic, what is the best cable modem and also firewall/router unit out right now that you can buy? :) Looking to get new units and I am not very up-to-date on my cable modem and router/firewall knowledge :p Been using the same units for almost 5 years now! :headexplode:

Motorola modem hands down & a good Linksys router. Mine are about the same age to dude I am in the same boat. This is what I would buy.

MOTOROLA SURFboard SB5101 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122003)

LINKSYS WRT160NL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124343)

I've got a Motorolla modem (came from my cable company) and its pretty reliable.

I LOVE my D-Link DGL-4300 gaming router though. Gigabit ethernet and a very solid wireless signal.

It also has a ton of configuration options.

I used Linksys for years, but this D-Link has been fantastic.

the new motorola surfboard DOCSIS 3.0 modem is great!

don't like linksys routers, last one i had was one of those dual band, believe it was WRT600N. huge disappointment.

For a cable modem check out the Motorola SB6120; its docsis 3.0 and under $100. As for routers I also really like my d-link 4300 but it is getting old. I would probably grab a d-link DIR-655 or the fancy new DGL-4500 if I was in the market today:)

Best router is one you build yourself.

pfSense is the software I use. I have a dedicated AP for wireless.

In all honesty, the Surfboards are kinda weak. I had an SB5101 that couldn't handle concurrent downloads and web browsing. My Linksys CM100 is pretty darn good, though.

I definitely second the DGL series, especially the 4500

Dumb question but can you use these modems with time warner or something like that?

Not dumb - if they are sold in that area, then yes. Users installs are a big source of new hook ups these days. If you move from outside that area and expect your old one to work, it may not though.

I'm using an SMC Networks 8014 myself. Modem and router in one. Slower than my homes Comcast provided Arris Emta though, with linksys router. Kind of meh.

I have FIOS, and since I have FIOS TV as well, I have to actually use both routers or else the info button on my TV doesn't work :( I use the DLink as my primary router, and the FIOS as a bridge for my TV with wireless and firewall disabled.

That looks wicked :D Perfect for what I need. I have some things I just want hardwired but at the same time I need wireless for my laptop and entertainment PC attached to my TV. How is the firewall on that unit jakup?

As for the modem... I think with TW all you have to do is give them the MAC address of the modem you wish to use and you are fine. I think you can use whatever modem you want?
