No, but I need to know. Had a close call with MCE adding pics I didn't want people to see when playing music. ::bleh::

MCE has an option to determine what folders you're sharing, by default your Pictures folder is auto-shared, so if you have some photos you don't want to show, just create a separate folder for them or... live with it :P

You see that's the problem, no matter what you have in MCE, once WMP12 has them because they are linked you can't stop them from being part of the library for Music or screensaver slideshows... Even if they don't show up in Pictures, they appear in the slideshows.

The other day I accidentally opened Windows Media Player and was greeted by the Media Player configuration wizard thing.

I'd had windows installed for like 6 months and never even run WMP.

I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema for videos and Foobar 2000 for music.

+iTunes here. ;)

WMP is a PoS.

WMP12 is ok for music/video playback. But I still use my tried and true VLC. ;)

VLC is good stuff, I use it as a fall-back if I get something with an odd-ball codec (as sometimes happens with TV shows atl).

Problem I have with WMP12 is that with H.264 (I use CoreCodec), it washes out the picture vs. playing through MPC-HC (again w/CoreCodec) the picture is as it should be.

VLC is great for playback, but not so great for Library browsing/management.

I prefer Winamp. :)

who ever made the libraries and decided to implement them everywhere including WMP should be burn at the stake

Maybe the folder-to-library/file-to-library implementation is somewhat invasive, but saying that the inventor should be burnt at a stake seems like a bit excessive, don't you think?

The Windows Media platform is not that bad, in fact it's great, and it's not like I'm acting biased, by comparison take a look at the GStreamer framework for Linux, it's a great platform, but... still lacking DVD support inside it, which (unfortunately) sucks.

VLC? Ok, it's not a bad player, but relies on FFMPEG, which sucks due to their developers changing the libraries and ruleset as often as they desire, not to mention their objective is to 'support any possible format' but not striving for precision, just for wide coverage, which is good, but lacks some real performance.

Want a wide codec coverage under WMP?

1. DivX
2. XviD
3. AC3Filter
4. Real Alternative
5. Quicktime Alternative
6. CCCP Codec Pack

Or..

1. Shark007 Windows 7 Codec Pack

You'll get the same ammount of codec coverage (including Flash, MKV, plus some more obscure formats, like Indeo if I remember correctly) with any of the two paths and still get a nice media player.

Just my 2 cents ;)

Don't mind nekro. He is Polish. Bit of a temper. Something about him invading Germany...

Anyway, I like WMP, especially the fact it has most codecs builtin with 7 and it's library management is pretty good except for this pictures business and the playback quality is better than most.

VLC and GOM are good fall backs, but the quality is pretty ordinary. ::(:

That is true. Maybe they will improve on it in the future.

If you are running multi screen and have WMP maxed on the 2nd, then do something on the first does it still come out of maximised? That one aspect keeps me away from ever using it as a video player.

Well after using it now for a bit I have come to like WMP12 and have started to use it a lot, but I still use MPC-HC for some stuff.

It stays maximised/fullscreen unless you maximise the app on the other screen. That's what Ive found anyway.

WMP is the one MS program that I will never get used to it does everything in a retarded way that i hate and want to kick ravenously for several hours on end until my foot has become a bloody mess of pulp urine and 5% real orange juice.

Continue discussion.

Libraries are pointless....

I bet im the only one left in the world that uses nStant Media!

QMP - Music
MPC-HC - videos while at desk, default player
nStantMedia - Not at desk, plays everything MPC-HC does
XBMC - Livingroom
TotalMedia - TV
