Just got a PS3 console to use at my GFs house. Plugged it all in, tried a game and a couple of blurays. Everything fine. Sat down to watch a dvd... its obviously impossible to describe a sound. But the dvd drive makes so much noise its shaking the cupboard its on. I seriously can't watch a film with the amount of noise its making. This is for DVDs only... blurays and games don't do this.

Anyways, so I took the exact DVD back to my own house and tried it on my PS3. Even with my head right next to the PS3 I can't hear hardly anything and its definately not shaking the shelf! What should I do? My PS3 is 2 years old, GFs is less than a week old. I assume the design has changed... is it faulty? Is this what new ones are like now? Or is there a setting to reduce the drive speed or summat?

Could be a faulty drive or something wrong with the drive support inside the unit. Contact Sony.

If possible, I would try to bring it back to the store to exchange it.

Is it a porno?

Errrr, no. :)

For some reason its not doing it anymore... I was getting the box together, etc to take it back to the store and thought I'd try it once more so I didn't look like a fool in the shop. Anyway, I tried about 5 dvds including the 1 I was watching when it was making all the noise. And its really really quiet... can't hear anything at all... dunno what to do now. Don't think I can convince them its faulty unless it starts doing it again.

LOL @ Fuku2

I hate when electronics do that. Wont work, but as you box it up it's fixed and then you worry it'll happen again just outside of warranty, if you send it away now, they'll find nothing wrong and charge a service fee.

It is just a cheeky PS3. It saw you getting ready to return it, so it got scared and decided to play nice.

All young electronics do it :)

Did it smell good when you opened it's box?

Tell me about it, often it's too late when you find a bad smelling one. ::(:

I think new PS3 is my fav smell in the whole world... and this is the 2nd new one in 2 years. My tv was close... but just not the same somehow.

It still makes the noise sometimes so I'm starring at it waiting for it to burst into flames. Its not frequent enough to convince the shop staff I'm not crazy.

Even if it's intermittent I'd bring it back.

Just explain to them exactly what is happening and that you are not willing to live with a device that has an intermittent problem.

What store did you buy it from? Just about any big box/chain will just take it back with no hassle. If it's some little shop it'll probably take a little more convincing but I know that if I were to sell a computer or computer part in my store and the customer had an intermittent issue and was unhappy I'd exchange it if they wanted an exchange.
