Argh! Dissapointed with GTX275 clocking...

Hey, I just picked up a BFG GTX275 not too long ago and frankly, it's been kinda dissapointing. My highest stable crysis OC is 675/1476/1188, anything higher crysis freezes. I'm using a fresh install of vista x64 and my system is a Q6600 at 3ghz and 1.32v, 4gb of ram, a Maximus Formula and a OCZ 600w Sxs PSU. I'm really at a loss about what to do. My temps are fine (Mid 70s Furmark Burn) and my power supply is enough. I don't get artifacts or anything, just games lock up without warning past those frequencies. For some odd reason Furmark and Vantage are both stable at 702/1512/1242, but as soon as try crysis or even CS on a full server (20 slots) it locks up and flushes the driver. I remember my Asus 6800u back in the AGP days had a similar issue, and once I flashed it to a XFX bios it helped alleviate the OC barrier. Would It be worth doing to the GTX275?

The only thing I can think of is the increased CPU/memory load during games, but my system is 24 hour prime stable and the PSU should be enough. Besides, doesn't vantage stress the CPU in the first test with all the physx enabled water and ti**ies?

Hehe, I know, I know. The GTX275 is plenty fast, but I always want to get more for my money :p . It just sucks, I mean my previous card - the 8800 G92GTS clocked up from 670/1674/970 all the way up to 848/1999/1052 without a hiccup. My cards before that clocked high as well -my GT 256mb as well as my 7950 AGP (Yeah:D). I was expecting more of the same for this card. But for $199 i'm not going to go try get a better clocking part.

If you can take it back and get your money back ,then I would go to newegg.com,and look at the Evga GTX 280 Recertified for $224.99 with free shipping ,or a GTX 260-216 $169 or better yet you can get a XFX recertified HD 4890 with a year warranty for $169.99 and they have been overclocked from 900nhz to 1000mhz on core and 1000mhz (4000GDDR5) to 1100mhz ( 4400mhz GDDR5) and they are faster then the GTX 280 in nearly ever case.But overclocking is always the luck of the draw ,you may get a great one and you may get one that just bearly makes it stated clocks.I disagree ,IMO if you could take it back i would get a ATI HD 4890,they are great cards and have great prices for the performance you get., and faster then a GTX 275.and they are quiet a few under $200

I understand your dissapointment, because that is a somewhat low clock. My guess is that if you unlink your core and shader clocks, you will be able to go higher on the core. You may also try bumping up the memory higher. So try for something ilke 702/1476/1242, and see how stable that is. I also very much doubt that CS will crash your card if you are Furmark stable. Make sure you run Furmark 1.6 and run it for an hour or so in xtreme stability mode, with post processing effects on and msaa on. If that is stable everything else probably will be. Its never a definite thing, and crysis is one of those oddballs that can crash systems that are otherwise stable.

My Core 216 I could never get over 650/1350/1250 stable in crysis. Don't feel too bad.

Btw, the best Crysis test to run is, after having run the game for 10-15 minutes, stand in a dense scene (easy to find), and throw a bunch of smoke around you. If your card can tolerate that then you are good to go (as long as you are also Furmark stable). OC'ing can be very easy or difficult, just depends on the card, and the stability of your system.

Thanks for the reply but it is unlocked, those are the highest values the card is stable at. Also, I never enable post-processing in furmark, it lowers my temps by alot. And just to clarify, when I say Furmark stable, I mean stable for 20 minutes or so, I'll try going for an hour.

I share your disappointment. I have 2 GTX275's. One overclocks way past 720 core which is great, and the other crashes when I go past 690 core, and these are the supposed 'hand picked' superclocked chips. Oh well. I don't like cryin over spilt milk so I'll shut it.

Hooray! I've finally tamed the card! Browsing OC versions of the 275 and 285 I found one thing in common, their 3d voltage was at 1.18v. For some reason mine was only at 1.17. I manned up and flashed my card with my modified bios, and voila! Blazing hot temperatures (10c hotter, 86c load under 100% fan), but also a lofty core oc - 738/1512/1215 stable. To think I was about to trade up to a 285... :p All this nail biting flashing brought me crysis at 1680x1050 with my very-super-dooper-ultra-mega high config and Lifesys ToDs at 30fps avg, 24 minimum :D

Haha, it's my hobby. Buy cheap(er) cards and squeeze as much as I can from them. Right now i'm sitting at 720/1476/1326 stable (15 passes of Crysis GPU time demo with Very High settings and 16xAA and 16xAF at 1680x150) Once I can be getting my hands on the new thermaltake GTX cooler, I'll be doing a hardmod (Stupid shaders that won't OC...)

This is going to deep for me.,The GTX 275 is a good card and if you game at 1680x1050 the Q6600 should be plenty,If you have a good heatsink cooler (which you may already have) then you may be able to overclock a little higher.I ran my Q6600 at 3.5gigs at 1.425v but I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 exetreme.My temps hit about 70c with Prime 95 ,but some of them just would'nt overclock much past 3gigs.If you upgrade to a Q9550 you should see a good increase ,most all them will do 4gigs pretty easy.That would help your performance.
