View Full Version : Why do we have to use driver cleaners ?

Do we still need to do this ? Are the driver authors incapable of maintaining a file manifest for each driver release and using the previous manifest in the new driver to make sure those files and reg keys are deleted before the newest driver is installed ? This just seems so simple. I never use them and have no issues and get the gains that others see. Could someone enlighten me please ? Even when problems happen there are other methods like forcing a standard vga driver to install then reloading driver x.

Driver cleaners are fairly overrated IMO. Registry settings aren't what improve performance; it’s the optimizations that the driver programming team makes with each revision. If those files aren't replaced correctly, well - then the setup should let you know.
The only time I bother is if I change graphics card manufactures.

Driver cleaners are for advanced users who know that developers never create a PROPER uninstall for ANY piece of software. When you uninstall something you no longer wish to use, there should be no trace of it left WHATSOEVER and Microsoft should demand this as a requirement to develop for the Windows platform. Companies would save million$ on customer support if they did this.

It's kind of like drugs, it always leaves a trace behind in the system. Running a driver cleaner is like giving your computer a piss test and if it tests positive for residue then, like drug users, the old drivers should be terminated.
I had a weird case where I thought I needed a Driver Cleaner. I only used one once, when switching from ATI to Nvidia to help clear out ATI CCC files and other remnants. It did help with switching brands.
But this time, I was uninstalling the Nvidia driver to put on the 190.38's. On reboot, Windows 7 decided to load the Windows Update 185.85's. When I went to install the new drivers, it said it wasn't done yet, so I rebooted again. I then installed the drivers but in the System Information tab, I had multiple versions all mixed up. I had to remove everything, then go into Device Manager and uninstall the Nvidia device and reboot. This put the default MS WDM driver back. Only then did it work.

Very good analogy shaw.
Very true also.
Their drugs in the system and they need to be removed.

Actually a lot BSODs come from old left over anti-virus. If you upgrade to a new AV program and there is still traces of the old program in your system, you could see some fairly crazy behavior.

Their = belonging to them. As in 'their car'.
There = a location. As in 'over there'.
They're = short for 'they are'. As in 'They're drugs in the system and they need to be removed'.
Sorry, but it bugs me when people get that wrong :D

That's not correct actually.
Say it to yourself: They are drugs in the system and need to be removed.
What are drugs in the system? People are drugs in the system and they need to be removed?
Proper: "There are drugs in the system and they need to be removed."
Improper: "If you upgrade to a new AV program and there is still traces of the old program in your system, you could see some fairly crazy behavior.
Proper: "there are still"
Don't sweat it, only 1 out of 100 people on the Internet actually know proper English.

Oh, you interpreted it like that? :D
I interpreted what Mr Bigman said as meaning "'They're drugs in the system and they need to be removed". Meaning the people, themselves, are drugs in the system :D
I was feeling in a particularly strange mood earlier today and I appologise to anyone who does not speak English as a first language.

Actually, the English language specifies that it is spelled as "apologize". ;)

In that case, we are both wrong. The correct spelling is 'Apologise'. Americans chose to spell it with a 'z' ;)

No, you are the only one wrong. America is #1 and how we spell things matters, especially on an American owned site like NVNews. Now apologize and let's move on. :D

Well it takes time for you to shed the loser status. The winner feeling came easy for me since I never really did drugs but don't worry grasshopper, it will come to you in time.

I hereby formally reclaim the English language for the use of the English and the people of the British Isles and Commonwealth nations alone. I believe that the French have a language that the rest of you can use.

Sorry, we already beat your asses and took it back during the Revolution. You will now have to beat our asses to take it back and I seriously doubt that would ever happen.
Good luck though, you're gonna need it. :D
