Multi-GPU Popularity Set to Grow, Claims Analyst

Even though not everyone likes the multi-GPU technologies as they exist today, in future, multi-GPU systems will account for about 50% of all desktop personal computers, claims Jon Peddie Research.
The market opportunity for multiple graphics cards used in gaming, workstations, and the developing market of GPU-compute has a potential of an 83% compound annual growth rate, according to JPR.

Based on the image, there will be nearly half of PCs powered by multi-GPU technology, such as ATI CrossFire or Nvidia SLI, in 2012.
it's not clear from the graph or article, but I'm assuming from the context that TAM stands for Total Addressable Market. CAGR is definitely Compound Annual Growth Rate.
SLI no longer a niche market?

Seems like alot of hot air to me, I dont intend to get a crossfire or SLI setup ever, and considering a GTX280 is more then most people need right now, with GTX300s on the horizon, and no sign of any games set to challenge the hardware, I think this is only valid in the render-farm market, not for home PCs

I doubt I will ever use more than one GPU.
I doubt people walking into best buy will pay for it, let alone stand there long enough to hear about it.
EDIT: Actually, I could see the common people buying this right up. They hear it's the latest thing and essential to have; they'll make sure they have it.

Either this guy is completely full of crap or he's talking about something completely different than SLI and Crossfire.
There is no way that even close to half of PCs (new or current) will have multiple GPUs in 3 years. In fact, I doubt a quarter of PCs will even have one discrete graphics card by then.

I'd like to see the original JPR document that graph came from. it's possible they were talking about a specific market rather than all PCs sold. the xbit article was too vague.

Usually xbit is a bit better than this. . . Talk about vague.
I can definitally see multi-core GPU's in the future, as GPU's are already highly parrallel. Though SLI/CF will always been an enthusiast opportunity imo.

This is the point that completely destroys that theory. Today most computers sold don't even have discrete graphics, so there's absolutely no way that in three years they're going to have two cards. In fact I would be thrilled if 50% had a single card in three years. It would make the lowest common denominator that developers have to write for a lot higher than it is right now so games would probably look noticeably better.
Unfortunately I don't think it's going to happen because most people don't buy computers with games in mind, so they want the absolute cheapest graphics card possible. I don't think CUDA is going to change that either because it's directed at applications that most people don't use. E-mail, internet, and word processing are not going to benefit from it any time soon.:)

I am thinking they will probably eliminate some of the integrated/low level GPUs altogether since the CPU will be able to handle solitaire and youtube.
I'd use Hybrid SLi if it actually worked.

no way that will happen especially considering most dells and compaqs use crappy intel extreme graphics

Low min FPS and microstutter and deal breakers for me.

Perhaps he count's those as the first GPU of the system. ;)

From the short time I had a capable board it did work for me. I would love to have an igp on my rig as I know its drawing way to much power when not gaming. I have stopped using it as much and do most of my web browsing on my ion.
