In your opinion, best performance to lowest (purely performance, I dont care about business ethics etc.):
Sapphire 9600 Pro
Gigabyte 9500
Sapphire 9700
Leadtek 5600 Ultra
Gigabyte 9700 Pro
Abit Siluro 5600 Ultra
I know how the IHV's cards stack up against each other, but I'm interested in what order people would buy these in. :)
EDIT: Yes, all stock and non modded (but I will overclock anyway :) )

Gigabyte 9700 Pro
Sapphire 9700
Sapphire 9600 Pro
Abit Siluro 5600 Ultra
Leadtek 5600 Ultra
Gigabyte 9500
That's assuming you mean all stock and non-modded.

Considering your "edit", the 9700 is your only choice. For $200, you can just delete the rest of that list. I'd get the pro if you could spare the extra $60, but the rest shouldn't be given any consideration.:p

Heh, $200. I included the 9700 Pro because I can get this for about £202. It's a little above what I wanted to spend, so I may end up going for a cheaper one. I may even hold out just a little while longer to see what NV40/R420 bring, and see what I can get for the same money then. Or just buy the best.
Gah, it used to be so easy :p

Seconded, I fully agree.
Where did you see a 9700Pro for 200 quid?

Well I've waited long enough to upgrade, think I'll go with the 9700 Pro. Couple of things which bother me about this:
* Linux Support
* Lack of DV (always said I wouldn't buy a Raddy unless it had this, so I guess I'll see if I've been living in "Disney World" like so many people would have you believe DV is only useful for. :p At least I will be one more person asking for this @ Rage3d)
* Some NTFS registry bug, which I don't actually know much about
Dazz, http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=40518 exc. VAT of course ;)

Some people no matter how stupid insist on repeatedly changing the system memory optimisation from "programs" to "system cache" in the faded effort that on older systems it gave a tiny boost of about 0.001%.
ATI's drivers don't like this memory hack, and will end up corrupting your harddrive. But because you can do it no problems on NV hardware (and get your 0.001% performance increase when running your sever software) then it's a major show-stopper flaw in the ATI drivers. ATI see it as a non-issue and laugh at the noobs who try to use it...
 :o

Dont worry, Ati has some really cool control panel features in the mix comming soon to a driver near you.
Also.. they are on track to have the best Linux drivers out there in the not to distant future.
Its going to be fun a year from now when a few things come to pass heh. It will be fun to see what people put down as the reasons they are still *holding off* on trying out an Ati card ;)

I'll believe it when I see it.
Hopefully, that'll be soon. :D

Me too, but for now its laughable, nVidia has had a head jump on the Linux driver thing, it will take ATi awhile to get their drivers to the current level of nVIDIA Linux drivers, that is if they ever do, seeing as how it took ATi 10 years to start making half-decent Windows drivers.

actually in 2/3 of the benchies the fx5600u eats the 9600 pro, but it should seeing the price difference and its not worth it, before the price hike, the 9700 np was $200 but demand pushed it to $250 and it could go up more  youd be better off with a best buy 9800 np for $299 or just grab a cheap but very fast 64mb ti4200 and wait a little

The best linux drivers in the not so distant future? Ive herd that this whole year. They eventually did post some type of 'drivers' for linux dated november 2002, they refused to compile for me though.

In games that love to cache alot and save big savefiles (baldurs gate and neverwinter nights) it speeds things up.
if you got 1GB ram and do some file organizing and video rendering its very nice with it on, and i miss it.

And here we are, seven months later without terribly much shown on this front. Perhaps my definition of the "not too distant future" is distorted.

I have no idea why you hate the 9600 pro so much, but it's generally accepted that the 9600 pro is better than the 5600 Ultra, the 5600 Ultra couldn't even run the HL2 benchmark at playable framerates, and the 9600 pro offers better quality anti-aliasing with a lower performance hit.

I don't mean to diss the HL2 Benchmark that was never released, but to be honest, I trust 3DMark03 more. Anyways, the 5600 (Ultra) is like, SO last year. Considering the current 9800 variant prices, so is the 9600 (Pro), it seems :).

As far as I'm aware, the 9600 pro also beats the 5600 Ultra. in 3Dmark2003...

People, this was more than seven months ago. Time to move on, nothing more to see here.
