I still not ready to dump cash into a complete i7 rebuild. I feel like this system still has some legs left. I'm replacing this Q6600\GeminII with a Q9550 \ Noctua NH-U12P, adding 4gb of matching RAM(total of 8gb) and cooling the GTX260 with an AC Accelero Xtreme280. I'm expecting excellent OCs from both the CPU and GPU.
Windows7 is on pre-order and we'll see what the next gen vid. cards will look like they are here...

If I had a P45 board I would have probably done the same thing, if you have a microcenter near you that chip is only $169.99 (nana2)

If you can, try to get the E0 revision on your Q9550.

I'll keep you posted
I had to order the components from different e-tailers so I'm expecting at least a week before it is all here....On the bright side, it'll give me time to buy some compressed air.....I haven't opened this case in awhile :o

I'm in Connecticut no MC's here....I got the CPU for $217 w/ free shipping (plus a free MS wireless kb & mouse, which I have no idea of what model they are or what to do with them..??)

Sweet let me know if there is a nice increase in performance from jumping up to the 45nm quad.

Step one is done, I put the extra RAM in, no problems with all four slots populated, the RAM ram running @ 1068 5-5-5-15 2.14v
I fell into an MSI GTX285 SuperPipe 2Gb 680/2500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127437) for $250
I simply could not say no, so add this to the upgrade

After kind of a rough start....I got a fairly decent OC out of this CPU and the GPU runs nice also but no point in going for more the gains are minimal. Details in my sig.

CPU- 433x8=3.46ghz, GPU- 700/1500/1260

Darkest of Days PhysX bench: @ 1920x1200 4x/8x, very high game settings, physx: low
ave. 31.4fps

Vantage:
15352, GPU 12588, CPU 44954
http://service.futuremark.com/results/showSingleResult.action?resultId=1328575&resultType=19

I'm happy with these clocks...but I'll definitely be playing with this CPU in the future when I'm bored, for now......bring on some new games!!! :D

here's a few pics of the new setup

Kickass PAIN, I would get this Athena Power 12" EPS-12V (8Pin) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198006) and rout the 8 pin behind the motherboard.

AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Mine barely made it behind the motherboard.

If you can get it up to 3.8 you should beat my Vantage score of 15415 pretty easily.

I worked the setup a weeeee bit more to 445x8 and it is rock solid at 3.56ghz

A bud told me about LinX (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=201670)...for stability testing, I had to give it a try and why not a few more ticks of the clock for a nice even 3.6ghz...?
The CPU and RAM tested fine at this new speed with Linx...so it stays

So what is your Vantage score at 3.6?

So what is your Vantage score at 3.6?

I don't know yet....I purchased an AC Accelero Xtreme280 HFS for the GTX260, just before I found the deal on the 285.....The Accelero does not fit on the GTX 2mb cards. So today I took out the dremel and modified the MSI Superpipe's RAM\PWM heatsink to fit with the Accelero HSF, it worked well 50C peak core temp :) ....I now have some monster GPU cooling and I'm going to test some new clocks..
I report back with Vantage

Ok, Its starting to hit the wall performance wise.... with the CPU at 3.6 and GTX @ 725/1525/1260
I got less then a 100pt. bump in Vantage....
15407, GPU-12689, CPU-43115

It is all good, I'm keeping the clocks right here temps are well controlled, the system is rock solid and quiet

Just curious why you are using a multiplier of 8 instead of 8.5?

PaiN
08-20-09, 08:12 AM
Wow better, thanks SO much! I was having some trouble getting this CPU to budge when I first got it in....At some point I dropped the multi to 8 to see if my hold back was the board or CPU(what was needed was ICH volts). :o once I got it going the multi slipped my mind....a combo of age and rustiness .......
Ok, good news its rock stable at 3.8 :D since it ran so good I decided work down the Vcor. I had been at 1.31v but was able to take it down to 1.28v with complete stability.

Very nice. What did you set your ICH volts to? I haven't messed with that. I can run at 4Ghz but after 5 minutes or so of Prime 95 or OCCT I get a BSOD. I may try messing with the ICH voltage.

MCH(1.1v) to 1.18v

ICH I/O(1.5v) to 1.6v
ICH Core(1.1v) to 1.2v

Just a small bump in volts made a huge difference in stability
Post back as to how it goes for you.....GL busting 4ghz
