Purely speculation, but this is a pretty big deal if its for real. Today Microsoft announced a partnership with Nokia. Microsoft will be releasing Office Mobile, Office Communicator Mobile, SharePoint, and Microsoft System Center. Okay, no big deal right?

Well they've also stated "the two companies also said they'll be working on "future user experiences" for Nokia customers." That means that Maemo (slated to be Nokia's smartphone platform for the future) potentially could have an Office port. Maemo also happens to be a Linux distribution, built for mobiles of course, but at its core its more Linux than even Android. Maemo's basic application stack is built off Linux applications.

That would mean a lot to Linux. If MS Office is available for Maemo, it should be easily portable to other distributions. This could very well be the beginning of the end of software obscurity on Linux.

With Red Hat and Ubuntu gaining ground, it's no surprise that an Office app aimed at Linux would be in the works.
