Bill went to NK because Kim Jong Il requested him. He was pushing buttons and was successful at making himself look very powerful, influential, and mistakenly merciful. He is very egotistical as many dictators are and thought he could make himself look good by getting a former president on his soil to negotiate. This was purely a political power play on his part, and a successful one at that in getting the United States to bow for his mercy for the release of the women. The tensions are still very high with NK and I believe will continue to ramp as they expand their nuclear capabilities indefinitely.
