I've been using Avira for a while and I've noticed lately that I can't block avnotify any more.

It seems like the popups always come back.

Did they change something with an update that overwrites avnotify.exe every time you update? I need to install some AV software on someone's computer and I want to use Avira but if I can't get rid of the popup I'll probably use something else.

Windows 2000 / Windows XP Pro

1. Go to Start > Run.
2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
3. Navigate through User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System.
4. Double click "Don't run specified Windows applications".
5. Enable it and click show.
6. Add "avnotify.exe".
7. Click OK on all open windows.
8. Restart.

Alternate:

1. Start > Run: secpol.msc (You can also access this program through 'Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy' this is useful if it is easier the location of this rather than the file name)
2. Right click "Software Restriction Policies," Choose "New Software Restriction Policies." (Skip this step if there are subfolders in Software Restriction Policies already.)
3. Right Click "Additional Rule" folder > New Path Rule.
4. Where it says Path, Type the path of avnotify.exe on your computer, or use the Browse button to find it. (On XP64 using a default install of Avira, the path is: (C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe)
5. Make sure the "Security Level" Dropdown menu is selected as "Disallowed"
6. If you would like to make sure it went through correctly, open the Additional Rules folder, and verify the path and security level.
7. Enjoy the absence of nag windows.

Windows XP Home

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Log into an account with administrator privileges.
3. Open [driveinstalledon]:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic.
4. Right click on avnotify.exe and go to Properties > Security > Advanced.
5. Click on Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> OK.
6. Repeat for all users.
7. Reboot your computer normally.

9. Run the command "cacls “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\Avira\Insertpath\avnotify.exe” /e /d Everyone" to change the rights without restarting. Everyone can be exhanged with another user account when needed


Windows Vista Business/Ultimate

1. Open the control panel through Start > Control Panel.
2. Go to Administrative Tools > Local security policy.
3. Click on Software Restriction Policy > Action > Create new restriction policy.
4. Right-click, and go to additional rules > new path rule.
5. Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\ and double-click avnotify.exe.
6. Set the security level to Disallowed.
7. Click apply and OK.

1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe for the current version, 9. For earlier versions, go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe.

BTW, I'll never pay for an antivirus program that "expires" after a year as long as free programs continue to get updates.

It doesn't make any sense.

I can download AVG or Avira for free and put it on any system I want and get free updates forever. Or I can spend $30 on a full version and be limited to a single PC and only get updates for a year. It seems kind of backward to me.

I never get any viruses anyway so it seems kind of pointless to buy one for my own system. I basically just use Avira to scan individual files. I've always disabled any background scanners any time I had antivirus software.

I found this.

Yes, I have disabled it by right clicking on 'avnotify.exe' and selecting Properties, then hit the Security tab, and then click Advanced, and one by one edit all of the users security properties and set the Traverse folder/Execute option to Deny and save. Works perfectly for me in Vista x64 Home Premium, and if you only edit that option (traverse/execute) it won't download the avnotify file every update. You can experiment a little and see how it goes. The objective is to deny execution to 'avnotify.exe' and yet still allow Avira to read the file attributes and other functions it needs.

Wow I didn't know you could even block those ads. I love Avira but those pop up ads are sometimes annoying when they minimize a game you are playing.
I tried that last tip mullet posted about the security policies and denying travese/execute for administrators and users. I'll see how it goes.

I haven't had the problem of the popup coming back...but I can tell you, that even though I have my updates set to MANUAL, it downloads and installs them anyway.

FYI, I have dialup, so I can set it to manual, to DL when I want it to.

I use the security policy method on my Ultimate machines and the deny read/execute on everything else. Never failed. I know it's wrong, but so are god damn annoying ads ::rant:: ::lol::

Disable traverse\execute for administrator, all users and SYSTEM and it should stay blocked, even after you update Avira.

Uhh no. The pop up ads come from Avira Antivrus free edition, not the browser.

Okay, I misunderstood, because I have never used that AV.
Currently, I using AVG Free, because my Outpost Security Suite has problems on W7, which I hope will be fixed soon. I haven't had any problems with AVG, but then it doesn't have as good of a protection score as Alvira, but I almost never get a virus, so it serves my purpose. I think that I have only had to deal with a virus once in all of my computer age, and even then, AVG detected it before I installed the infected program.

I just payed for the software... after using it for 3 years I thought they finally deserved my money.

There's a problem with blocking the popup though. When the program updates, it detects that the popup is blocked and forces you to restart to apply the update. They added this "feature" a few months back at which point I ditched Avira and paid the $40 for Norton 2009 antivirus (which gives you 3 licenses). No popups, does what its supposed to, runs super fast and doesn't hog resources.

I don't think it's about the resources, but the detection rate. Although resources is a good as well — which Avira doesn't take as much of.

Out of the 16 AntiVirus softare they tested over at AVComparatives, Avira ranked 1st and Norton ranked 12th. And the ProActive tests weren't too far off. Avira (69%), Norton (35%).

But for what it's worth, Avira did have some false positives which gave it much lower scores. But hey, I'm not complaining for it being free. :) I'm not having any issues with the popup ads or anything after updating the definitions, nor do I have to restart. I just tested myself right now.

Yep no problems with disabling ads here either. It updates like normal (except no pop ups) and it sure hasn't asked me to reboot. I think you just wasted some money and got worse protection for nothing einstein ;)

never heard of this...but i am still on Norton 09 and its doing a fine job.
