View Full Version : what are ratio settings?
I hear things like..
"set your ration to 1:1"
"set your ratio to 6:6"
"set your ratio to 4:5"
I believe this has to do with memory timings and FSB...? At least, I think so...
Can someone explain?

I think it's the ratio between your FSB and your memory. Something like, with a 250FSB, and a 4:5 ratio, your memory would be running at 200Mhz.
I'm sure someone can explain this much better, if I even got it right (last Pentium I touched was a P200 ;) )
Yes, this is the ratio between FSB to memory. It allows you to increase your FSB to a speed greater than that of memory. High FSB means better performance because it relieves the bottleneck. :D
I believe that's it, unless someone can better explain this... :)
Is there any difference between a 1:1 ratio and a 6:6 ratio?

That would be the same thing. Here is how you work with ratios:
Let's say you have a ratio of 4:5 with a CPU frequency of 133MHz. The resulting RAM frequency would be 166MHz.
CPU frequency multiplied by corresponding RAM ratio, all divided by the corresponding CPU ratio will give you the resulting frequency. (133 x 5) / 4
Therefore, if you have 133 and ratio of 6:6, (133 x 6)/6 = 133MHz
I hope this makes it more clear:D
PS When running for the first time or testing, I would advise you to run ratio 1:1 first. Later if you wanna get some more performance and overclock your sys, fool around with the ratios.;)

250MHz with a ratio of 5:4 would give you 200MHz if I'm not mistaken... ;)
High FSB, lower RAM speed.
I see the logic. I appreciate your help!
