Out of interest guys i want your opinions on this issue.. why should anyone get an FX5900 instead of a Radeon 9800pro ?
No flaming, just honest reasons (if possible).
Because they are stupid. GFX 5900Ultra can't handle DX 9.0 aplications. It's good card for older and current games, but not at all for future games.
NV35 is the same bad chip like NV30, and because of that Nvidia taped out NV40 and it will make NV40 as soon as possible to replace NV35 and NV30. NV40 should be a new chip, othewise hmmmm Nvidia should make for living making something else.
All I know r420 is going to be some serious ****, and If Nvidia doesn't have an answer well...

rofl another fanATIc that's just funny
from what we have seen (DIII alpha) the NV3X kicks R3XX ass if talking about future gaming ....
although things might change a little when final product is out...
yet i see 3X better for future then R3XX...
5900U 256mb= best speed
9800pro 256mb= best IQ (however i find NV's 4XS better then ATI's 6X, i saw bought card in action yet it's just a personal thing i see).
you won't be wrong whether it would be 9800 or 5900 ;)

Well... my own personal reason why I'm considering investing in a 5900 is that I fancy a change... see what the other side has to offer. Although I agree with BigFish7, you really can't go wrong with either 5900 or 9800... both good cards

Doom 3 isnt a fair test, its very nvidia friendly, the speed in other games is no better than the 9800 and its IQ is lower generally. I wont be buying Doom 3 anyway.

With all honesty, and seriousness, I believe nVidia to supply a more reliable card.
I owned a 9700; while it was installed my computer would randomly freeze, leaving no event log entries or memory dumps.
(The saga is posted in the 2cpu.com forums; it involved replacing my RAM, removing my RAID controller, swapping NICs, CDs, sound cards, and basically everything else, plus reinstalling between every change and permutation (like 100 times...) before it was tracked down.)
Removing the card and replacing it with a TNT2 (what I had) fixed the problem. It could have just been a bad card, but I definately have better trust in Nvidia cards. I just wish they had better 2D.
Any word on the NV35's 2d?

The NV30/35 cards are only good for OLD games such as Doom 3, Quake 4 and any spin off from the doom3 engine, and all games that have not been released yet, infact they compeltely kill R300 cards in them.
But R300/350 are good for FUTURE games such as Unreal, Quake 1, Tribes 1.
If you call a staged Doom3 review KILLED then so be it.......
TBO GS you are starting to sound like the guy I first met here who stated that the ATi cards are the ones who are noisy with gr8 IQ....
I really think you should dump that hunk of crap 9800p that you are so unhappy with and get the 5900U....
Why don't you try the EVGA model, you know the one they are having massive problems with........
Just go to BB /compusa/circuit city/frys and grab one off the shelf........
It'll probably make ya feel better.

Being good in one engine doesnt mean much to me, especially an engine i wont be buying any of the offspring of.

keep an eye out on the vs/ps speeds of the new products from both ihv's to have an idea about what their potential performance is likely to be in future games..
the fx5900 ULTRA is a good product and the IQ/performance is quite good...
the 9800pro is shipping and also is a very good solution.. and @ this time offers superior ps/vs performance... that situation is unlikely to change over the current iteration of the nv3x gpu's though it may be fixed with future versions of the gpus...
considering reliability... I have yet to have any problems with any of the 5 video cards I have owned... incl 2 iterations of the 9700pro (the regular 9700pro and now the AIW 9700pro)...
when discussing standardised paths... the r3xx is a fair bit faster... when talking about paths that have been coded around the nv3x architecture to improve performance... it definitely holds its own/ is slightly faster than the standardised paths...
Well if ya start saving now you will be able to get one when they FINALLY are readily available.........
EBAY that 9800p that you can't use, as obviously you are very unhappy with it.
Then cut your losses.

its not always the users' fault :)

if a company has 65% of the market then there is no stupid thing as "unfair because it's Nv friendly", i can say same thing about the next thing:
AMDs cpu is 100% faster then INTEL's in 3d rendering but you see all the 3d application are INTEL optimized, so it's unfair...
just get this from what we have seen (for now, things might change) NV3X better for future gaming

BigFish7....Actually nvidia has less than 50 % market share. If nvidia continues to push developers it will be opening itself up to antitrust accusations.

No, I am tired of your ceaseless and false accusations and innuendo on other forums and now here. I don't have a 5900 Ultra yet and until I do, all I could comment on is "other people's speculation". If that is what you go by, fine. I prefer to see things for myself before I make comments about products I haven't tried, unlike some people. If you don't like that answer, I feel VERY sorry for you.

Actually i have a 9700np, a 9800 and an FX5900 (amounst others). I was looking for other peoples opinions, its interesting to see what other people think. If you dont have a 5900 then why are you commenting on it all the time ?

Oh, so because I and the vast majority here and other places who DON'T have one, we should not be able to comment on the card? Unbelievable!
I have yet to comment on anything regarding it's performance and/or IQ because I have yet to see one in action.
It strikes me awfully strange that someone with your very public dislike (stated here and in other forums) for nVidia and the 5900 would start a thread such as this if not for the sole purpose of creating an inflammatory and eventually useless thread. If you really do have a 5900 and dislike it and nVidia so much, why on earth do you still have it?
I questioned your intent for creating this thread and I stand by it. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

The FX5900 would be fine in isolation, but against the R3x0, and with all this driver stuff going on its not looking so good.
You may not be a flamer in the 'ATI suck, nvidia rock' sense (like N40 is) but its clear where your loyalties, no, preferences are. Im happy to accept ATIs limitations, like (still somewhat) dodgy drivers, poor AF quality and sometimes over touchy compatability with other hardware, but if anyrhing like that is said about nvidia your one of the first to nvidias defense. Its tiresome.
